Is it possible to recompile your installation DVD to include your programs so that you don't have to do a massive reinstallation everytime you reinstall your OS? Well I know it's possible due to people making such Warez as "Vista Lite" and such, but is it more effort than it's worth?

I'm not sure if vlite supports Windows 7 yet, but why not just image your system once everything is loaded.

The app installs are not slipstreamed, but they are *readily* available - no media swapping needed to get them all installed.
It is basically an intermediary between a vanilla W7 install and manually re-installing / installation of all apps and a slipstreamed W7 *with* apps install.
But, here is the really really *really* good part - the W7 SDK has been out for a couple of days now as well....

Oh I understand. I already have all my installation exe's and stuff in a folder ready to install from my 1TB Drive.
What I want to know is how preload stuff onto DVDs, I'm messing around with Vista's installation with vLite and I don't see how to preload programs.

TedI don't want an image of my OS with Programs Installed. I want a DVD that installs the OS and the Software Preloaded such as one that you get from your OEM that comes with proprietary software.
That's not what he is asking, Ted - he wants a slipstreamed system that he can take with particular apps already on the DVD - so they are *preinstalled* - as in take it to a new machine and blow the partition away and install.
I used to do this with XP, because I could actually tell XP which partitions to use for what - so I had a system partition with nothing but the system drive, and a separate partition that actually created Program Files and the entire Documents and Settings structure on that partition - meaning I had a very small system partition *and* all my settings were saved whenever I blew away the system partition and started from scratch.
In the same manner, a slipstreamed DVD also contains drivers for your system, apps that you always want installed, etc - it is your own home made installation brew not for *backup* purposes but for *future installs* purposes.
I2 - you can use the multi button at the right to quot multiple people at one time - it makes it easier to read than making separate posts for each quotation....

I have vLite for Vista and I can't see where to add your own programs to it...

As for adding apps - there was a side project over at NeoWin detailing exactly how to add apps, as nuhi just made vLite about removing stuff from the basic Vista install....

Oh, it is there - I promise you - I had started working on making a slipstreamed install with Office and WinRAR and a few other little goodies - then ran into the brick wall of not being able to pre-define the location of my special folders - and gave up.

I manually move them to my second hard drive after every install of Vista (and now W7) - so when I need to do a new install, all my docs are on a physically separate HD and away I go - no complicated backup scheme.
My goal was to also figure out a way to have the Users tree there also - then all my *settings* and such would also get preserved - making life that much easier.

No - MSUs are spcailly built MSIs...
not all EXEs are MSI based....but those that are you can use unpacker to extract the MSI from....

With W7 it ain't gonna be possible yet until the SDK is played with and folks figure out how to do it.
For Vista, it's there, just convoluted - and 5 minutes of scanning ain't gonna get you the answer. It is there, but you have to spend a lot of time reading.

I do what John does - have folders on a separate partition , including one with app. setup files and install the apps. direct from there after reinstalling the o/s.
Vlite does work (largely ) with 7 even as is, so won't be long before Dino gets 7lite going.
I vlited 6801 - removed a lot without any probs. - components that were common To Vista come out fine. Didn't mess with the UAC settings as it's different in 7.
On Vista , I use this to control UAC - no problems for me using it at all . You might like to check it out

Since I have dual HDs, all my installs, drivers, and miscellaneous stuff resides on the other drive, hell, in W7 I even make new libraries for the most used folders (ISOs, Drivers, and Storage). One HD gets dedicated to nothing but OSs and one gets dedicated to storage.
On installs in the field, I keep my 4 GB UFD handy with main apps - antimalware, testing an benchmarking tools and of course, utilities like Magic JellyBean keyfinder. Makes life easier when I can reuse the same keys when blowing a clients machine away and starting from scratch....
