211 processes? Wow, any lag or lack of performance with that much processes?
Just enough to do what I need to do - no more no less
76
16 are svchost.exe and I have no idea what they are all for.

Awesome. Thanks for that link.
I'm at 55, but also only because I'm doing a SyncToy run, and a bit of web browsing. When my work day begins (it's almost bedtime ), you can expect me to add at least another 7 or 8 to that count...
42 on cold boot.
47 at the moment
43 on the x64 version after startup, 7 of which are unnecessary but tolerated.
61...
Currently 83, with Chrome making up 10 of them.

It is kind of sad that we need to run so many processes. My old XP computer runs around 20. It is better than Vista, which was easily in the 90s.

Apparently a message of just 50 isn't sufficient enough.

69 currently running for all users:
I think I m getting confused with the reports here - there are three different questions: (i) how many processes the system runs after booting up (before you start working), (ii) how many processes you are typically running while working, and (iii) what's the maximum number of processes your system can run without any problem (i.e overheating, slowing down, etc.).
I think that the last two are subjective - depending on your working habits and hardware configuration.
For the first question, no one has reported anything less than 40 so far, that seems to be a reasonable minimum, right?

49 for me
51 here.
Well... anserwing the 3 exact questions:
- At boot, I get over 29 to 30 processes
- When working, 7 tends to do some stuf I don't know, then, I get over 37 processes at much... the most I got was 39
- I guess that I can run more than 100 processes without getting slowdown issues...
The max memory I ever used using 7 was about 1.40 GB. more or less 30% of my total physical RAM (4.00 GB)... In my laptop is a bit different, I get 31 processes at startup, more or less 37 when working, and can run more than 80 processes without slowing down... ths can be subjective though... In my desktop I have a more powerful CPU (by 600 Mhz... not too much, but seems to do a difference...) and not every process takes more than 1% of CPU time if used...
See ya!!

44 here.
Only time it starts to strain is when doing complicated Photoshop actions. Mind you I've only got 2gb of ram fitted.
At the time I bought the PC it was a toss up between an extra 2gb of ram or Win7 64b instead of XP Pro. The Win7 won.

Says I ahve 90 processes running but I only count 33. What is that about? anyone know? about 49%
Did you put a check in the "Show Processes From All Users" thingy?
I did yes. checked or unchecked is 83/85
It is my wife's computer. This is why I build mine. It has a ton of services running.
Toshiba loaded it up. My one processor whoops her two processors hehe.
Toshiba does make good lap tops though.
