Win 7 64bit freezing up part 1

ritzon

windows 7 is freezing up completely, cant move the mouse or anything, its really annoying the heck out of me. its been happening for weeks. i have replaced my old video card with an evga gtx 465, i have tried my ram in all different slots, i have tried both sticks by themselves, i have ran memtest, prime95, i have ran data lifeguard to test my hard drive... i have updated drivers, i have put a box fan next to my comp to see if it was overheating. and there are no minidumps...

richc46

Did you run a antivirus scan and download and scan with malwarebytes?
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Did you go to search and type event viewer and look for errors.

How about a clean boot.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

ritzon

nothing in event viewer other than the unexpected shutdowns every time it crashes, i havent tried a clean boot will though. and will try the malware. it has been doing this since i installed win7 64 on a new computer.

richc46

I did not know that it started with the install. Did you do a clean install or upgrade?
An upgrade: you did not have to reinstall programs.

ritzon

clean

richc46

Thats fine, then. An upgrade would have warranted a reinstall.

ritzon

the only thing not brand new in my computer is my disc drive

richc46

If the clean boot and other suggestions do not work, try in safe mode. If you report results tonight, I will see it tomorrow.

ritzon

gona goto sleep, i'll try some more after work tomorrow.

ritzon

it seems to be getting worse, i can now log onto wow and it freezes withing about 10-15 minutes. i can play wow and watch a video and freezes within just a couple minutes.

but i can just surf the internet without it freezing, its just on games/videos, mainly netflix and gom player, i dont know if it does it on videos on youtube or anything alike.

richc46

Do you know how hot it gets?

ritzon

on wow i know my gpu stays low to mid 50s celcius, my cpu stays mid 40s

richc46

What happened with clean boot and safe mode?

ritzon

i havent done it all yet, had to sleep for work. i did up too the part where i turned all the non microsoft services off, now i need to turn them off and try that.

richc46

Post as soon as you get the results. I do not have to be online, I will post as soon as I find out. We will get this fixed, I already have other ideas.

richc46

If the tests are negative and I am not on. Test your hard drive. Go to the website of your Hard Drive mfg, and test it. Defrg it. Make sure you have ample free space available.

ritzon

im trying wow right now with gomplayer playing, with the sound services off.
i couldnt play wow with my last restart because it turned off the internet as well. but i think it may be my sound causing the problem something my friend mentioned to me when i froze a week or so ago.

richc46

Yes could be a driver. Go to device manager, look for yellow warning markers by the drivers. Make sure drivers are up to date.

ritzon

well, its not sound, froze again time to continue trying the clean boot

ritzon

well, every time i turn the top half off i cant try wow because i wont have internet, i try to turn on ones i think are for internet but i don't seem to be turning on all the right ones. so i need to figure out which ones to leave on.

ritzon

Take a look at this tutorial, and see if you can crash the machine via the keyboard ("Memory dump of the entire system" section). This is best done with a PS/2 keyboard (as it still uses interrupts - a USB keyboard does not). If you set this up as per that guide, reboot, and reproduce the issue, try holding down the right-hand side CTRL key (this is important - left CTRL doesn't work for this) and press the SCROLL LOCK key *twice* (all whilst holding down the right CTRL key). If done with a PS/2 keyboard and the OS kernel is still responding, this should trigger a bugcheck with an 0x000000E2 code (manually_initiated_crash). If it does not, that means the OS isn't responding even to the most basic interrupts, and almost always signifies a hardware error.

richc46

cluberti, im following the guide but im not sure how to edit the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters"

i dont know what to edit in there.

ritzon

While you are wating for an answer, continue with my suggestions. We can have two helping at one time

ritzon

i cant start wow in safe mode, so i dont think i can try to recreate the freeze in that.
i ran mass effect 2 with half of the windows services off like it tells you in the clean boot guide, it ran for 20 minutes before i stopped it to turn the other half off, but then i got sidetracked by the registry stuff

ritzon

trying to recreate the freeze for the memory dump but it wont, ugh

back to finnishing the clean boot stuff >_<

richc46

richc46, what are some other things i could try? atm im working on the clean boot with the 2nd half turned off to see if it crashes.

ritzon

If the clean boot does not give any leads. Go to the website of the harddrive manufacturer and take the HD test. Lets be sure that is not the problem.

Defrag the hard drive.
Do a disc scan
Make sure there is enough available space.

richc46

ok i will try that, so far im at 55 minutes with gom player and wow playing, im going to do this until i get a crash or until i have to sleep. so no more posts tonight for me unless i crash. i will update tomorrow.

ritzon

No rush, whenver your are ready.

Good night.

Guest

alright its almost 1am atm, so far it ran 3 1/2 hours and no freeze. hopefully it wont freeze after a bit more time.

ritzon

alright, im home from work. going to try this for a couple more hours to be sure it wont freeze. then if it doesnt freeze time to figure out which services is causing it.

richc46

Ill be going to dinner soon, but wish you luck

ritzon

well, it froze last nights 3 and a half hours were just luck i guess

richc46

Are you 100% certain that it is not overheating?

ritzon

i have had a box fan on it for the past 3 days to be sure

ritzon

eh, i have no idea what to do. im so tired of trying to fix this

richc46

There are only so many options availbale.
Try this: Boot the computer and carefully listen to the beeps. Tell me number, long, short etc. and computer model.

ritzon

i will but not right this second, i am waiting for it to freeze again so i can try the thing the guy posted yesterday. and i built my computer so no model

ritzon

ok, it froze i tried what he said it did nothing at all, i started it back up and did not hear any beeps.

fatguy

not trying to hijack, but i am having the same issue. but mine only stays up for about 20 seconds. stays up in safe mode forever.

i am using ultimate trouble shooter, everything is turned off in start up as well. have run all the malware software plus external scans through norton. im clean. so think that it is a software issue. can have system off for days, turn on then crash. not a heat issue.

help

ritzon

ok, so i have replaced my motherboard and havent had any problems for 3 days so far.

thanks for all the help everyone who replied to this thread.

richc46
