Graphics issue with Age of Empires II: The Conquerors part 1

Xenochria

I have been a long time Age of Empires II player, and have once suffered from the classic red grass and purple water graphics issue that a lot of people suffer from. However, using one of the below solutions, it eventually corrected itself. Recently, I installed Windows 7, build 7100 as my main operating system. AoEII (Conquerors exp. too) did not work on the original Windows 7 build, but now does, however, no matter what I do, scouring the internet for solutions and ways to solve the problem the graphics issue of the red grass and purple water stay. Here are the solutions I've read about and tried, all to no avail.

Changing the resolution
Alt tabbing
Opening a folder before the game loads
Unchecking "CPU 1" on the "Set Affinity" box in Task Manager
Updating graphics drivers to most recent
Updating DirectX to most recent
Running the game in compatibility mode for XP, Vista, 98, etc.

None of these solutions work at all, the green grass is still red, and the water is still purple.

Here are my system specs.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Build 7100
AMD Athlon 64 6000+ ~3.0GHz
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Direct X 11
Running at 1920x1080

Can anyone recommend any other solution to the graphics problem? Thanks.

Here's a picture of the issue (screenshotting doesn't show the graphics problem)

i have no ideia.. but tell me one thing can u still play that online ?

Xenochria

Yep, flawlessly.

AeonGamer

It's AoE:The Mars Expansion
Did you try finding a different Video Driver? or Dumbing down your graphics options outside the game?
Do keep in mind it was a game built for a different Technical Era of computers.
They didn't have things like HD Cards back then they didn't even have DDR Cards far as I recall.
So knock down the graphics a good bit find a video driver maybe a newer one and see if it fixes the Wacky Red Grass Purple Water Mars effect.

Hello everybody!!!
I have ''Windows 7'' and i'm playing ''Age Of Empires 2 & The Conquerors Expansion''. I had the same graphic issue but i read some forums and i started to test it my own.

After a while i found a solution that is working fine for me!!

Go to your game folder and locate ''age2_x1''.
Right-click, Properties and choose ''Compatibility'' tab.
Then press on ''Choose settings for all users'' button.
Mark the ''Run this program in compatibility mode for:'' and choose
''Windows 98 / Windows me''
Then under settings mark ''Disable visual themes'', ''Disable desktop composition'', ''Disable display scaling on high DPI settings'' and ''Run this program as an administrator'' and click ''ok'' and again ''ok'' and you are done.

Please test if this works and post.

AeonGamer

No no no and No for me
Matter of fact it made it look worse.

dragon1

didn't work for me either...
however the fix suggested for starcraft worked for AOE2 but not starcraft:
StarCraft fix holy cow!

i've tried everything i possible could for AOE2 and starcraft but this only seems to work for AOE2 and not starcraft for me...

logicearth

I downloaded a mod to run AOE2 in a window which solves the graphic problems.

Code Hunter

Hello, have you tried to adjust your screen's resolution? And if so, what is the lowest resolution you tested? This will sometimes fix the issue.

thank you very much...

I have windows 7 32bit running on Macbook by Bootcamp 3.0

it's work great now... thanks again

Bond007

I have same problem too...

Any one have better solution..?

SJMX

A solution i found was:

1) Open the task manager up (right-click on taskbar, and start task manager)
2) Disable "explorer.exe" (yes this will make everything disappear but you can get it back from starting "explorer.exe" again)
3) Start the game by using the task manager (File, New Task (Run))

That seemed to work for me 100% of the time.

Hope you get the same results i did.

Scott

Lord Jon

You don't have to run in window mode. Explorer is the main problem. You can create a bat script that fixes everything for you. You have to make a txt file into the dir of the exe, which is properly "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_x1". Or on 32 bit systems: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_x1".

Open the txt file and copy/past the following:
Quote:
taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
age2_x1.exe
Start explorer.exe
Now save and close the txt file and rename the text file to "The Conquerors.bat", make sure that it doesn't end with '.txt' but with '.bat'. All without the quotes.

The only thing you have to do now is making a short cut to the bat file to launch the game. And now you are done! Run the bat file as admin and the game should run without any lag or mistaken colours. Have fun!

EDIT: Aah, I see that you were first SJMX! Good to see that more people found this solution!

SJMX

Heh. I may have been first but you did that with style!

Have fun on Age of Empires 2 which is still number one on my favourite games ever list!

Lord Jon

Age of Empires II is together with Stronghold Crusader on my number one games list ever!
I'm still playing lan party's with friends on Age of Empires II.
Also a recommend site for you guys: Age of Kings Heaven.

Searching in the forum I found this simple solution, is for starcraft but worked for me.

Mmm, it sounds very simple. Too bad it doesn't work for me. So I stay with the close explorer method.

walt13

Heavy sigh - I tried all the compatibility items with no luck. I tried the solution posted by SJMX and when I try to run the game file it says to insert the correct disc even though it is in the drive. I tried the batch file posted by Lord Jon - It starts up OK but I end up getting the same disc message and explorer starts back up. The only thing I could not do was run the .bat file as admin - I could not check the box. Any help here is appreciated-thanks.

walt13

More info - I uninstalled Conquerors and reinstalled it. The batch file worked fine and the colors were great. Then I applied the "c" patch and I am now where I was before - the disc is not recognized. Very strange - hopefully a solution?????

Although I do not have AoE, I have a similar issue for Master of Orion II, I tried your fix and it worked, although there are a couple more tweaks to do. Its very encouraging. You can check the thead for Master of Orion II here:

Master of Orion II - Anyone got it to work correctly?

If you have anymore imput that would be great

You can try applying a no-cd patch. That would fix the whole problem of searching for the right disc. I recommend you GameCopyWorld, but I see that they redirected to this site and this site. Here is a direct link to the latest one on MegaGames -

I have my game cracked like most of my games because this saves my CDs actually being used. I never thought about this before but this could be a factor in my theory of the "explorer.exe" process working. Maybe when you disable "explorer.exe" CDs cant be read? This is jsut speculation though as I have not tested this myself.

Lord Jon

Mm, that sounds a bit logical.. I'm gona test this now. I'll post the results soon.

If killing explorer.exe works for you, this should make it hassle free. Copy and paste the following into notepad (not including the code start/end headings), and save as "play.cmd" (no quotes)

--Code start--

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
empires2.exe
Start explorer.exe

--Code end--

This SHOULD fix it.

I believe I've seen this before on page 2...
But you're right, it should work!

Wait, that isn't logical! You say you have tried all those solutions above but they don't work. But killing explorer.exe will fix it? That's crazy because there are two solutions above that do exactly the same!!!
Anyway, thanks for your help.

Jessica

Hi everyone. I was having this problem, but I managed to get it all working with Windows 7 64bit.

This is what I did:-

Right-click on the icon on desktop, select properties go to the compatibility tab, click on change setting for all users.

Set compatibility mode to Windows 98/Windows ME, tick the boxes for Disable visual Themes, Disable desktop composition and Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.

Tick Run this program as administrator.

Select Apply and then OK

This works for me. The only problem I have is that when I ALT+TAB back to desktop and then back into the game, all the colours get screwed up again.

The other way of getting AOE2TC to run with Windows 7 64bit is to run a program called Suspender. Using this program allows me to play the game OK, but you cant ALT+TAB any more.

Sasqwatch

Finally, after trying all suggestions here, I have found one that works.

Change the desktop to Windows classic. Thats it. Runs no probs now.

walt13

Windows classic did not work for me - the colors are still crap. The post before that one did not work either. When I try to run compatibility for Win 98/ME the program will not load up. When I try for Win XP it loads, but colors are still crap.

Still, the only thing that has worked is disabling explorer.exe, except that after installing the C patch it does not recognize the CD. I also have Alcohol 120 installed with an image for the game mounted so it should recognize that, but it does not.

I was at a friends house last weekend and he has exactly the same issues, including the C patch problem.

walt13

I just saw this on another forum - maybe a similar solution was posted here earlier.

Change desktop theme to Windows Classic - not Windows 7 basic which I think I tried earlier. Bring up the screen resolution - minimize it. Start the game - it appears to work fine even with the C patch installed. WOOHOO

SJMX

All this now means that the problem lies within Windows 7's GUI. I dont think that microsoft actually support the game anymore with patches etc so it looks like we are on our own boys with this one.

Spaceritual

The going to Windows Classic and then minimising the resolution screen actually works for me on windows 7 ultimate 32 bit, so very pleased

igan

i also have a problem, you see i am using laptop with 1366x768 resolution under ATI Radeon HD 3200 hardware..

The problem is that the game display with black bars on the left and right and it's not full screen. The colors can be fixed by killing the explorer.exe process although it's kinda making me hectic.

Does any one knows how to fix this?

Thanks

Lord Jon

There are several solutions already posted. I don't want to act like I'm getting tired of these questions, but I'm really close to it! For the last time:
READ THE SOLUTIONS ABOVE.
If you don't want to stop explorer manual then make a simple .bat script in notepad. It's explained in one of my posts in this topic.
Take a look at this one and see if it works for you.
Good luck and enjoy the game!

Tony51203

I have the exact same problems as you with the C patch. I find disabling explorer fixed the color issues but I still get what I can only describe as shadows on the screen when I scroll. It's like different p[arts of the screen are repeating themselves.

killa4eva50

I had the same issue. I found that making your theme to "windows classic" and opening the "screen resolution" window before playing a solution.

montu89c

After entering the game, open the task manager. Go to process and end the explorer[dont end the entire process tree but just the explorer process]. Enjoy the game!

The batch file that you wrote didn't exactly work for me since after the explorer shutdown command the working directory gets changed to the system directory and then it can't find the game .exe, plus explorer starts up immediately again which results in the same graphic problem for me. I edited it to the following:
Quote:
@Echo off
taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
cd /d %~dp0
Start /w age2_x1.exe
Start explorer.exe
Basicly it changes the working directory to the path the batch file was executed from and then waits for the game to close before it starts explorer back up again. Same story, save as batch file in the same directory as the game .exe and create a link to it. Run the link as admin as else it wont stop explorer.

tearsofpurple

Thanks SO MUCH Lord Jon. Been searching the internet forever to find a fix to this! The batch file does the trick

Lord Jon

No problem. It wasn't easy for me to find to problem. Is after hours searching (also in taskmanager) I found the problem. That was for me enough lost time to write the script and place it as fast as I could on the internet. I still use it without any problems. Have fun!

DrumCorpsNut

I tried many of the solutions here. None of the bat files worked; I just got a no-cd message. But one thing has been working so far.

Open Screen Resolution window
Change theme to "Windows Classic" (in the Personalize window)
I also have it set to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 3, and I checked the box "Run as Administrator", but I'm not sure if those last two are affecting it yet.

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64bit, my computer is an HP dv6z with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 series graphics card.

Hope this helps at least some of you.

Yes, and this is the best solution if you are going to play online with something like GameRanger. I have to do this every time now. Oh well, small sacrifice for a great game!

Gogogojack

I tried your *.bat file but had the following error results...
Explorer terminates as hoped!
However, I get this error messabge: "Cannot locate the CD-ROM. Please insert teh correct CD-ROM, Select OK adn restart Application.
Please help :-) :-) :-) Maestro.
Thank you - Muchisimas Gracias!

I know very well the frustrations of trying to find a fix for this. I tried everything, but the one thing that worked for me 100% was to switch to the Windows Classic Theme and open the Screen Resolution window. However, I don't like using the Windows Classic theme because I, personally think, that it is very ugly (come on, if I'm gonna use Windows 7, I want it to look pretty ), and I don't personally like to have to open the Screen Resolution window every time I want to play.

So I've spent the last 6 hours or so doing much research and have created a batch file that automatically switches my Windows theme to Classic, open up the Screen resolution window, and run Age of Empires. After exiting my game, the batch file then reverts my Windows theme back to what it originally was and closes out the Screen resolution window.

With this taking so much time, I decided that I did not want to keep this to myself, and I have taken the time to upload the files I created so I could share with everybody that has this problem.

Here is the download link:

Windows 7 Conquerors Color Fix.zip

Instructions on how to use these files are included in the readme file (very, very highly recommended that you read it before doing anything with the files.)

I hope this helps somebody, I know it helps me immensely!

oh yeah, this solved me the problem. how simple and cheap but thx a lot

mnk1001

I faced this problem since I was using windows XP and had a fix over it. The fix works on windows 7 but with a demerit. Let me explain how it works: 1) Start AOE II and before you start the game ie just after selecting the no of players 2) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL or SHIFT+CTRL+ESC to go to task manager 3) In the process tab select EXPLORER.EXE and right click on it and end the process. 4) The super bar and the desktop icons would vanish. So press SHIFT+TAB to find AOE II 5) Play the game and when you exit it, go to the FILE -> NEW TASK in task manager and type EXPLORER and press enter.... VOILA you got the super bar and desktop icons. I know that it's a bit frustrating to do this every time but if you have a better solution plz tell me too. NB: I forgot to mention but yeah you need to use the compatibility option to play the game in Windows XP SP3 mode. This can be done by right clicking the shortcut->properties and then select open file location. Right click the file and select properties and select compatibility tab and change the compatibility to Windows XP SP3 for All users

Going to this thread Windows 7/Vista Color Fix and following the advice at the very bottom of the registry worked for me. Involves no programs, no closing explorer and restarting explorer. Adding this to your registry and you can play with no color issues and you can alt tab out of the game during play and back in again with no issues. At least no issues I for me so far.

how to play old games on windows 7 with full hd graphics this removes grass and water looking like confetie and makes it look like you were running windows xp

Had been looking for a solution to this problem and found Dragon1's (starcraft fix). This worked for me perfectly !!

triplez

hello there...

I still have problems here. Everytime i run the game on my win7 pro, it can't go fullscreen so i can see 2 black areas on either side and the colors are wrong, the grass and water are not completely green and blue. I've tried all the solutions above but none worked. I really like this game so if you have any other solutions, pleaseeee help me

Undyingsins

Hello.

Just like triplez, I'm still having problems running AoE on my computer. I have tried the various solutions listed here, but that will either stop the game from running, not start the game at all, or simply continue the game with the red grass. I dearly love Age of Empires and I would love the chance to play it again, nothing else seems to compare.

I have the black bars on the sides, but I could live with that. I just want to know how to fix the grass and water. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have also looked up various other solutions, but none have worked.

------------

Never mind, I have gotten my game fixed.

meri

To fix the color issue
1.change your window theme to windows 7 basic
2.go to screen resolution(leave this window open,do not close)
3.open the game and the color will be fixed

To fix full screen issue:
1.change the resolution to 1024x768
2.open the game and play
the opening page doesnt fit but the game does so start a game you'll understand

I tried so much and found these answers:-) enjoy the game

Ditty

First thanks for everyone efforts on this tremendous game... There is certainly a passion for this game... Ok, I have tried the solutions above and find that server work almost flawlessly. The .BAT file and the changing of the theme to classic fix the color issue perfectly. But, here is a strange one... When I run the Conqueror's edition, it says conquerors on the opening page, but when the game starts it looks like the basic Empires of Ages II game (no expansion). You can tell right away when clicking on the scout and seeing that there are no Attack Stances listed, just the basic icon to put then in a building. I still run under a different computer on XP just fine, but would love to make the switch... (Don't know how long computers will support XP). (Thanks!!!J) Issue Resolved... Works perfectly... Thanks...

It does, I've been using it for the past months.
The new AI is incredibly brutal though.

I hope they implement the old basic AI too, I am not an AoE hardcore player, and I like taking my time and not having to rush everything in fear of having the new AI destroy my village after 5 minutes of starting the game.

killertoy

Me and my wife love this game. The fix I found was on youtube.
basically kill what is running in the background so it can run clean on the PC.
1.
in notepad type:

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
age2_x1.Exe
Start explorer.exe

2.
save the file as a .bat file move it into the folder you find the age2_x1.exe file and click on this .bat file instead of age2_x1.exe file.

Sorry I can't take credit for this, I only found the solution after a night of hunting for it. see:
How To Fix Age Of Empires 2 & Conquerors On Windows 7 - Colors Problem - - YouTube

no issues to report

patelabhi1605

1. Start AOE II.
2. Open Task Manager(Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
3. Go to process and find explorer.
4. Right Click on explorer and select end process(don't click "End Process Tree").
5. Press alt+tab.
This works every time enjoy...
And when u finished playin your game press Ctrl+Shift+Esc(to open taskmanager), select Applications, select "New Task", type "Explorer". and u are back from where u started...

Bit late but:

Graphics problem, Age of Empires The Conquerers resolved when I changed mouse.

As well as graphics problem I found that mouse stuttered occasionally. Changed to Logitech mouse and both problems appear resolved.
