Hello there.
I'm new on this forum.

My OS is still XP,but i think it's time to get Windows 7. Soon or later i'll have too.
But i have some questions about Windows 7,compared to XP.
My specs : Intel7 920@2.66 , Gigabyte GA EX58-UD5, 3 GB DDR3,Asus GTX 285, 2 x WD 6400 AAKS...
So,let's start :
Do you think that Windows 7 is faster than XP ? I mean, copy big files from one to another partitions,video-pictures-music editing,or archive,compress..? Gaming ( fps ) ? reboot time, shut down time, event internet browsing ...???
You think is worth to go for Windows 7 ?
Thanks in advance.

To be honest, Windows 7 might not be any faster. XP uses less resources than 7 does.
Be sure to run the Upgrade Advisor if you are considering upgrading: Free Download PC Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Hardware Programs Issues
Reboot time may be faster. Is it worth it? It depends on your budget. For the extra features, and just staying on the cutting edge, I would pay the money, even though XP still works.

I believe that on certain hardware, it is faster. Especially with multi-core processors. I remember reading an article (can't find it at the moment so take this with a grain of salt) that 7 was programed to better utilize multi-core processors than XP was. I've noticed somethings being faster on my computer after the upgrade from XP to 7 x64, but as with all things, "mileage may vary."

Windows 7 will handle a load or intensive apps better, due to better memory management. It is definitely not slower than XP, let's say that.
However, people don't switch to Windows 7 for performance. It is for the feature set. You have a very modern computer, yet are running a 9 year old OS on it. Take that as you wish.
Overall, there isn't really any way we can answer your question. The differences between the two and the features of Windows 7 are well known and documented. You know your needs and budget better than any of us, so take all of that info into consideration, and you'll have your answer.

Deacon mentioning features made me realize you might want to look at these wiki articles:

List of features removed in Windows 7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
List of features removed in Windows Vista - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I included the feature removed in Vista article because some features were removed since XP but aren't mentioned in the 7 article.

Windows 7 Review: XP vs Vista vs 7 in 80+ Benchmarks | Maximum PC
Quote:
Whether youre coming from XP or Vista, Windows 7 offers a massive leap forward in usability, security, and support for new hardware and technology, especially for enthusiasts and power users. For anyone who regularly keeps many windows open at once time, the new Taskbar is worth the price of admission alone. For XP users, the security improvements are equally worthy of praise, while Vista users will be thrilled with the much improved, much less annoying UAC. Add in support for new hardware technologies, more new features, and the kernel improvements that should allow you to get more from your multi-core CPU, and Windows 7 becomes a tidy, compelling package to all Windows users.
I think i'll go for 7
I remember when i installed last year,Windows 7 RC build 7100 71xx , i was actually surprised.
But there was a few thinks i didn't like ( that's a question of taste )
I don't know how to describe that ,but i try : when you move your mouse cursor over the desktop icons ( not only there ) i wish i could have it like in XP,i mean, no "wawes / shadows " or whatever.
The same when you move the mouse cursor over the C/D/E/F partition. Same think, i hate that
And i don't think there is a way to disable this feature. But like i said " that's a question of taste"
I attache here a link with a picture made in Windows 7,i hope you'll understand what i mean.

Thanks a lot,archie123
Yeah,i find a lot of little things,annoying.
When i installed first time ( last year ) Windows 7, it took hours to fix the taskbar, same like in XP or Vista.
By the way : if i do "remove the check from 'Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on the Desktop " would that "affect" everything in explorer, about this kind of "shadows " ? I hope so

Drop shadows are used so that if a lighter desktop background is selected (there is a slideshow which can be selected in Win7), the icons are highlighted a bit more so they don't get lost in the background detail.
I don't believe this has anything to do with highlighting something you select in Explorer. But the Visual Effects control panel you were directed to likely has the setting somewhere in there which can adjust these settings to your taste, if they can be.

Tomorrow i'll get the Windows 7 ( i ordered today )
I have a few more question,about.
- Can i get the 2 folders ( shared documents and my name's documents,above - on top - the drive icons ?
I have to be honest, I'm not even sure what you're asking. After you install it, make a screen cap, then post it. Tell us how you want it to look and we'll get you taken care of.
Sharing is handled a bit differently on Win7 so it's best for you to get installed and then ask questions as they present themselves.
Make your XP Recovery disks if you haven't already so you have a path back to factory condition in case you want to sell your computer but keep Win7. Then you can delete all partitions to clean install Win7: Clean Install Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums.URL
When you first boot the Win7 DVD, it will scan the HD to see XP and pass a flag to allow use of Upgrade version key - even if you then go on to delete all partitions using Custom>Drive options shown in screenshots #7 & #8 in tutorial linked above.
The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your computer or device model.
Install programs slowly with time to gauge performance changes. Don't allow any programs to write themselves into msconfig>Startup list besides AV and gadgets as they become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU.
Use a lean lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which installs in 30 seconds, updates and then disappears unless a threat arises.
When you have it set up and running as you like, clean and order the HD using state-of-the-art CCleaner ("Run Cleaner" and Registry tabs) then Auslogics Disk and Registry Defraggers monthly.
Save a Win7 backup image so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD (or a replacement) using stored image from Win7 DVD Repair console.

Stereo,
Windows 7 is, from a usability standpoint, as good as and better (if that makes sense) than XP. I still use XP in VM's as the "gold standard" for testing but after being on 7 since last November I wouldn't go back as my main O/S. Not because XP wouldn't work - simply because 7 is, well, so nicely refined. Everything works. The device driver model has been so nicely refined that you almost don't have to do anything at-all anymore from a setup standpoint. You plug in your device, 7 says "hang on a second pal while I figure out what you just gave me" ... then he just sets it up and says "you're good to go - like fries with that?". The thing just plain rocks. I'm talking about so unobtrusive that you can completely focus on what you are doing instead of maintaining the O/S. Trouble-free. Worth every penny I paid for it.

I get what he's talking about. As for the shadow or whatever you want to call it, I couldn't find a way to disable it in explorer, so I can't help you. I think its convenient, so I'm not going to spend hours looking for a way to do it either. I think someone already mentioned a way to get rid of it. Read previous post.
I don't think you can make the changes in Computer that you want to (if I'm reading your questions right). The best tool for things like that is google. If its on the web, google can find it for you.

Call me crazy, but I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary in your screenshots either.
He doesn't want ordinary. He wants different. Thats the point. You know how stuff gets highlighted when you place the cursor over it in explorer? Is there a way to disable that? Make it look like XP's explorer.

As we don't know what version of Windows 7 you have I can't say. I think it is available in some but not all versions!
There must be some tricks, small programs...
I still looking in Google.
Were you maybe looking for something like GodMode
But I haven't the time to keep going back over a topic to find details that should be available on every post in the Specs. When it just says Windows XP in a Windows 7 Forum that's not much help is it?

Your system specs do still say you have XP. Just look below your name on your posts and you can see it, so he does have a point.

What about " Always open all Control Panel Items when opening Control Panel" if i can't acces gpedit.msc ?

I'm still searching in Google. Thanks a lot for helping.
Dude, forget about the "all control panel items". you have something a lot better that Microsoft doesn't even want you to know about. Just to make sure, all you trying to get the control panel to show more items, or get it to show all the different icons, instead of categories?
I don't think there is a way to get rid of the previews completely, as they'd be necessary if you had more than one window of the same program open and both were minimized. Without you couldn't choose which to restore/maximize easily. Don't worry about turning off every new feature. You'd only be hurting yourself by doing so. Every Windows release from now on is going to have the majority of these features, or more complicated versions of them, so you might as well get used to a few of them.

7 feels faster & smoother to me than XP.Mostly due to managing and using memory better I think.
After getting used to 7 and going back to XP it seems apparent.
Perhaps it just me though.

I attach here a link with a picture made in Windows 7,i hope you'll understand what i mean.

+1 Very well said.
I have read all this and it's a lot of reading. Like most of us who have went to Windows 7 you will find things that are different than XP. There is a learning curve. Most of all little things that are different between the two systems you will find some sort of answer with a search on the site. I never though I would ever stop using XP-PRO but I went to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 and fooled around with it for about a week and decided it was a great move. I use God Mode and think it's great; if you can't do it there you probably don't need to do it. There is only so much you can do to make Windows 7 work and look like XP. IMHO if one wants Windows 7 to be XP just install XP again and be happy. Give Windows 7 and yourself a chance to get to know each other.
