In fact, most will receive a pop-up coming out of the system tray telling them that there is a MSE update.

Of course, zero problems encountered and I let the update run while running other programs.

Yeah I just got my notification. Zero issues, even after the upgrade

tktk88

I did the upgrade as well no issues

eldinv

Updated... thanks Microsoft.

Dark Nova Gamer

Still using the Ongoing beta verison here, no issues here either. Though of course I didn't receive an update today.

Glad to see the public build hasn't had any problems though.

dockster

This update includes some type of genuine validation check. One of my systems did not pass (ironically its a windows ultimate rec'd directly from MS). I rolled back via System Restore Points and will deal with it later.

So its still sneaky of them to include WGA Validator in an upgrade to MSE. Its not just an enhanced checker for MSE. It then puts a "this copy of windows is not genuine" message on the desktop lower right corner.

karlsnooks

Actually not sneaky, although not well-publicized that MSE would also be used to validate.

I saw no mention of a WGA Validator. Did you do an update or a first time install?

That was the only time I saw something about a validation check.

Weird

You're correct

The upgrade has no mention or use of WGA. The only time it 'Validates' is when performing a new install of MSE on the 3rd screen you click 'Validate' then seconds later you have a 'This copy of Windows passed genuine validation'.

They may have made slight changes to the way it detects 'Genuine' software as a measure to counter piracy but there's nothing sneaky about that in a fresh install

No issues for install, and it's scanning faster on a full scan for me

Not complaining, but it takes me less than one minute to do a quick scan.

mr pc

Lovely - I had a bad feeling I'd get an error and lo and behold. I have threatfire on my machine as well - could that be the problem?!?

wtf

Appears there are 12 critical security updates as well (as announced?)

Uninstalled - dl the file from MSE site and still no dice

why does this keep happening? And if it has anything to do with my windows installer - how do I fix that? Just poked into my registry and the install isn't prompting to update. The common user wouldn't know any better and would be completely lost. MS needs to fix this stupidity.

And the installion STOPS again. DEAD IN THE WATER

mr pc

Fixed!

How? I don't know - I just kept mashing buttons like Street Fighter

actually some steps I took - uninstalled threatfire (after downloading their uninstaller...geez!)

ran some random MS fixit tool I had sitting on my HD - reran the MSE install - same error, tried again and blam! It magically installed

I really wish there was a rhyme or reason to that error code - it appears there are many causes and possible fixes ( been there, done that before ). There must be a secret reg key somewhere....

I installed the update only, not a clean install. I rolled it back. I'll do it again and then take a screen shot to show you all.

EDIT: Just installed the upgrade again. Installed it through Windows Update -- didn't install any other updates, only the MSE Client Upgrade. Here's the screenshot...

I'm glad you got it figured out

I've been running MSE 2 beta when I see they just updated version 1. Now what to do? 2 beta has been working well but now I wonder if I'm better protected with the updated v1 or the older 2 beta...

The public version of Microsoft Security Essentials and the Ongoing beta verison of it both get the same definition updates. So you are not at more risk with the ongoing beta.

Subsonic

Thanks Steven! Good to know!

v2 older ?
is it ?

oops, i thought that v2 was newer than v1....

MSE v2:
Security Essentials Version: 2.0.375.0
Antimalware Client Version: 3.0.6509.0
Engine Version: 1.1.6201.0
Antivirus definition: 1.91.1759.0
Antispyware definition: 1.91.1759.0

actually, as you can see v2 has a newer version of the Antimalware Client than v1...
and its the same definition files as v1.

have you never looked under settings, realtime protection ?
v2-beta also offers MORE protection than v1, take a look at the last option:
"Enable network protection against exploits of known vulnerabilities".

the only "risk" is that a beta might cause problems...
anyway, ive been running v2-beta together with EAM since it was released, and i havent noticed any "real" problems at all,
the only thing ive seen is that the taskbar-icon is sometimes missing, but that also happens with v1.

Subsonic

Hi Hackerman1,

The new version 1 just came out this week. The 2 beta I had installed was from a couple of months ago if I remember right. I know the 2 beta does do some thing more than version 1 but one thing it doesn't have is a command line scanner capability.

I have my security set up similar to yours except I used Avast 5 free as my real time scanner and use MSE on demand. I have written a script and converted it to a scr screensaver that runs MSE quick scan and then my preferred screensaver.

yes, MSE v2-beta was released some time ago, but its engine etc. has been updated since then, if i remember correctly there was an update not long ago.

MSE has a "command line scanner" !
open a command shell & run "MpCmdRun.exe /?", there is a lot of options available....

i have both MSE & EAM with realtime-protection.

Subsonic

Yes, I run the MpCmdRun.exe from version 1. In the 2 beta, I could not find MpCmdRun.exe.

you could not find MpCmdRun.exe ?
really ?

with a standard installation, the path is: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\Antimalware\MpCmdRun.exe"

Guest

Interesting. Maybe I need to try a reinstall of 2 beta. I looked in that path and neither the .exe or the .dll existed in 2 beta as they do in v1.

i looked at your system specs, you are running W7-64.
maybe its somewhere else on a 64-bit system ?

anyway, do a search for it....

Guest

That was it! I re-upgraded to version 2 beta and did a search for MpCmdRun.exe. Its default path in x64 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\AntiMalware\. I re-wrote my script, re-compiled into a screensaver and it now works fine. Sometimes we need to be prodded to take that one more step! THANKS!

now im confused, isnt that the SAME path i posted above... ?
where did you look for it ?
is it located somewhere else in v1 ?

that screensaver-script sounds interesting, could you please post it ?
but, i suggest you create a new thread.

thanks for the rep. !

Subsonic

In version 1 MY default install path was: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\

Here is the script:

@echo off
"c:\program files\microsoft security client\Antimalware\MPCMDRUN.EXE" -Scan -1
D:\Utility\aquarium.scr /s
rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
exit

I then compiled the .bat to a .exe and changed the .exe extension to .scr

Works great!

interesting, i normally dont use a screensaver because ive had some interference on a scanner (radio),
whenever i turn off the screen.
yes, i know its weird....

but now the interfence is gone, so i was thinking about starting using a screensaver, and the idea of doing a scan when the system is idle isnt bad.

i saw something similar somewhere, could have been yesterday, someone using a screensaver-script for some antivirus, could have been MSE.

sastusbulbas

I actually looked in C:\Microsoft Security Client\ I just needed to look down one more subdirectory (\antimalware) to find it!

I had found an MSE screensaver here:

Automatically Scan Your PC With Microsoft Security Essentials When System Is Idle

but had a problem with it. The only way I could run this on either of my x64 machines was to completely turn off UAC. I didn't like that so I set out and created my own. I have a utility that converts .bat or .cmd files to .exe's. All you have to do is change the exe extension to .scr and you have a screensaver! Works well now and I can keep my UAC on.

yes, it might have been that page on "intowindows" that i saw.

do you know how to stop the upgrade of MSE. i have the older version and i don"t want to upgrade but it keeps tell me to upgrade. what can i do ? it is a way to modify some registry or something like that?

you have misunderstood this thread...
there is no upgrade from MSE v1 to v2.
the upgrade mentioned here is to a newer version of v1.

MSE v2-beta must be downloaded separately, then v1 must be uninstalled before you install v2-beta.

when v2-beta is finally released there might be an upgrade directly from v1.

so you can relax, Microsoft is NOT forcing you to upgrade to MSE v2-beta....

Hopalong X

ok , so i have the last version of the mse but i want the old one. when i install an old version the update center prompt me to upte the mse but i don"t want . if i dont upgrade an icon apears near the clock and kepp tell me to upgrade

Orbital Shark

adicontakt

It is an update to Version 1 that you have installed not a new version.
It is very poor terminology by MS.

Hopalong X

It's not quite bad terminology

You are infact upgrading from 1 revision/version to another so technically it is an upgrade.

My question still stands to adictontakt, why not download the upgrade? You'll find that it probably hosts stability & security updates that cannot be downloaded via the definition updates.

Orbital Shark

Confusing terminology for many.
