Manufacturer refurbished laptop? part 1

xXFL4WL3Ss

Hello everyone, I found an HP laptop on Ebay that has exactly the specs I want even more, BUT it's manufacturer refurbished, is that a bad thing?? did anyone buy a laptop that was refurbished before?

LINK

Here are the main specs that it has:

-Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-820QM Quad Core Processor 1.73GHz/8MB L3 Cache/1333MHz FSB with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz

-8GB DDR3 System Memory (4 Dimm)

-500GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

-1GB ATI Mobility Radeon (TM) HD 4830 Graphics - For i7 Processors

-and most importantly it has a 15in 1920x1080p screen, finally I found a 15in laptop with a FULL HD screen.

anyways what you guys think?? worth the money?? safe to buy from Ebay?? also the seller has a %100 postive feedback.

Thanks!

The Howling Wolves

I have a refurbished desktop( see my system specs) that I purchased from Cosco over 3 years ago.
Just recently I got a bargain on a refurbished laptop i5, 6GB DDR3, 2 separate HD's 250 each with a 17.3 screen by HP from Sam's Club. for $350. No they don't have any left.

Caution:IMHO I would not buy refurbished on Ebay. I would only buy refurbished from local Box Store or reputable sites on the web.

I have had no trouble with either so far. The only thing I would replace is the operator!

xXFL4WL3Ss

Yeah Ebay is the only thing bothering me, I never bought anything from Ebay over $1000, the guy has %100 feedback, and I can pay with paypal, also I can return it if I didn't want it, but still I need to be convinced more to get his laptop, the specs are amazing for the price, what you guys think?

The Howling Wolves

Your gut is telling you NO ..............Don't buy it! IMO
There will always a better and safer deal tomorrow!

DocBrown

I got an Hp refurb from TigerDirect 4 months, ago. It's fine.

This one on ebay seems over priced for a refurb.

linnemeyerhere

I've purchased two refurbished laptops from TigerDirect and they both have been good but you are limited on the warranty so factoring in the extended warranty would be prudent !

xXFL4WL3Ss

$1500 is how much Bestbuy is selling this one, and it's not even limited edition

LINK

you guys can check the specs if you want and compare it to the one on Ebay, I personally don't think the one on Ebay is expensive.

whs

The price is steep. Compare to this $900 system from Office Depot. And I would never buy anything that costs more than 3 bucks from Ebay..

linnemeyerhere

Can't go wrong with Toshiba !
Toshiba Qosmio X500-S1801 Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7-720QM 1.6GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Blu-RayDVDRW, 18.4 Display, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, RedBlack PQX33U-01H01M at TigerDirect

linnemeyerhere

Asus looks nice for a lot less !
ASUS K52JT-XT1 Laptop Computer - Intel Core i7-740QM 1.73GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6 Display, 1GB ATI HD 6370, HDMI, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 1-Year Warranty 1-Year Accidental at TigerDirect

whs

This Toshibe is $500 more expensive than this one and you get a lesser CPU - but a slightly bigger screen. And I would love the backlit keyboard on the $900 system.

linnemeyerhere

Not sure where O.D. is getting them but your right sounds and looks nice.

xXFL4WL3Ss

The reason I want the Envy not just because of the good specs, but it also looks good, and btw I really don't want to get anything bigger than a 15in screen, the laptop I'm typing on right now is a 17in Gateway and this machine is big, I really want something smaller and lighter to carry around, but at the same time I want it to be a beast inside!

whs

You have to watch out - if you cramp too many Watts into a small laptop, you may run into a heat problem. CPU, Graphics and the HDD can produce a lot of heat. I had this problem with a HP laptop. You could fry eggs on it. I solved it by replacing the HDD by a SSD (which really was my only option).

xXFL4WL3Ss

SDD is expensive man, too expensive.

I think if you have a $1500 PC, the $200 for the SSD are justified.

whs,
For $1700 for a laptop that baby better sing my to sleep and have my coffee ready in the morning......I guess I am just C H E A P!!!

Jacee

Here's the Envy for less than Ebay Consumer Electronics > Computers > Portable Computers, Hewlett Packard - Search - Buy.com

I've bought items through Buy.com before. They're quick to ship, and I haven't had any problems with my purchases.

i aggree with you. But the OP was looking at a $1500 refurbished laptop and there the addl. $200 for the SSD should be OK - especially considering the gain in speed.

xXFL4WL3Ss

Are you sure it's only $200, I was trying to customize a laptop on Sony's website and I tried to add an SDD 500gb I believe and the price was $1300?

whs

For one you do not buy an SSD from Sony. You do not know what you get and they charge an arm and a leg. Second you do not go for 500GBs - that is expensive. But a nice 120GB SSD will be less than $200 when on sale. Here is one for the "normal" price: Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

I agree

xXFL4WL3Ss

How's this laptop guys?

whs

Looks nice - but not from Ebay. Not in 100 years. Too many scams.

xXFL4WL3Ss

Yeah Ebay is the only place selling it at this price, on Dell's website it's almost double in money, and the specs aren't even the same, plus Dell took out the 1080p option from this laptop a couple days ago

Jacee

Does this one work? Buy.com - HP Envy 14-1100 14-1163SE XL841UA Notebook - Core i5 i5-460M 2.53GHz - 14.5" - Black

Jacee

Never mind ... it's currently sold out

That is cheap lol. My gaming laptop cost well over that.

I would not buy anything "refurbished" from eBay. eBay US at least has degraded into a cesspool of crap for sale by "stores."

Find a factory refurbished laptop from a reputable store, you won't be disappointed. I still have a refurbished XP desktop from 2004

whs

Again, have a look at this one. It has everything you want plus a super graphics card at $900. It is only short on RAM (has 4GBs - it is hard to envision why you would need more). But that is easy to fix. Toshiba Satellite A665 S6093 Laptop Computer With 16 LED Backlit Screen Intel Core i7 740QM Processor With 8 Way Multi Task Processing by Office Depot

On the graphics card one review commented this: NVIDIA GeForce GT300 is surely a wild beast.

Yes you're right but the resolution is 1366 x 768, like I said before it's really hard to find a 15in laptop with a 1080p screen.

whs

Hmm, I guess the 1080p is important to you. I would not know the difference. I never use a game - not even Hearts - LOL.

LiquidSnak

Even a small 15" laptop runs at 720p resolution. That's hi-def too, you know.

xXFL4WL3Ss

Yeah I know what you guys mean, but I'm spending $1500 mybe more on a laptop and I'm keeping it for a long time, so I kinda don't wanna regret not getting this or that you know, I wanna be fully satisfied with my purchase

I hear what you are saying, but consider this:

a. A top of the line laptop has powerful components (CPU, Graphics, HDD) that need a lot of electricity and therefore produce a lot of heat. That laptop will run hot like hell and there is little you can do about it. The lifespan of such a laptop will be very short.

b. Because of the packaging of the laptop, you can only access the RAM bay and the HDD bay. That gives you few options to change/upgrade the system. I changed the HDD in a "hot" HP laptop and replaced it with a SSD. That solved the heat problem but also cost good money for less disk space (as compared to the original HDD).

c. Laptops are not really intended as "workhorses". For that, desktops are a lot better. And regardles what you buy now, it is going to be "old iron" in a few months from now. I therefore always recommend to buy "middle of the road" laptops in the $500 to $700 range.

d. With a desktop you have a lot more options. The box does not heat up that easily and if it does you can change the fans. You can also change/upgrade other components very easily and "go with the times". All you need is a good mobo (e.g. with an LGA 1366 socket for Intel) and you will be open ended for a while. If it comes with an i5 or i7 CPU you could move to a i7 x980 or the new x990, you can upgrade the graphics, add a SSD for the OS without losing your HDD(s) - (in one Dell box I even tied my SSD with Velco to the frame because these Dell morons did not provide for disk bays). You can also get a screen of your choice - I like big screens and currently work with 22" - but bigger is better.

So bottom line: Get a cheap laptop (or netbook) to check your mail at Starbucks or McDonalds, but get a desktop for home.

Yeah you're kinda right, I don't need to get the most powerfull laptop out there, i5, 4gb ram etc... will be fine, and you also reminded me of laptop heat, my laptop heats up right now like crazy, up to 85-90c, just surfing the net, and I don't want that to happen to my next one.

whs

Good, I am glad you can follow my logic. I would hate you to spend a lot of money only to find out that you "bought" a lot of problems.
But your laptop is too hot. You need to do something about that or it will melt some day. For starters you can blow out the vents with compressed air. Then I would get a coolpad - they sell for $20 to $40. And finally you can do what I did - replace the HDD with a SSD, but that is kind of expensive. I did that because it was the wife's pet laptop. But that is another story.

That is a nice one. I have never seen that one before. The only thing to consider is the USB power - that draws again on the laptops electricity (=heat). I prefer the ones that are powered from the wall outlet.

linnemeyerhere

I have two X Pads and can speak to how well they work. Well work is an odd term for a static item but work they do. Sometimes the simple answers are the best !

xXFL4WL3Ss

Since were talking about heating and cooling, can you guys tell me which processor heats up more i7 or i5?? is the better the processor the more heat the laptop gets? or it doesn't matter?

whs

If you really want to know, look up the specs of the CPUs and the higher the Wattage the more heat. E.g. the Intel i7 950 has 130 Watt and the i5 661 has 87 Watt (some of the other i5's have 95 Watt). Compare that to an equivalent bulb in your lamp and you know how much heat we are talking about.

It may work, but that bag is ridiculous.

I just looked it up on google, and the i7 740 and 840 are both 45 watts...one more question, does the higher the processor effect battery life?

Those are the QM versions for laptops @ 1.7GHz. The more watts it draws, the shorter will your battery stay up. But "battery life" per se (like in total lifetime) is probably little effected.
