Hi all first post, hopefully someone here can help with this perplexing problem, I'm in Iceland and the local ISP's tech couldn't solve so I'm hoping someone here can.
The simplified version.
I have adsl through my ISP which provides both TV and internet. I am connected through their router, directly cat 5e through one switch which splits off to main floor cable box and then into the computer room.
Here's the interesting part, when connecting directly to my laptop I get a internet connection no problems. Take the same wire over to the desktop and nothing works, only rarely is it even able to do a ping or tracert.
At this point I figured a possible hardware issue, onboard ethernet. So I used a wireless NIC and then a normal expansion NIC with the same results. Figured at this point, likely motherboard problem. So at this point when I was about to buy a whole new mobo, I wen't to my brothers house with my desktop, hooked up the computer and bam the internet worked instantly with no problems.
So this is a very unusual one, I'm not a total noobie and have tried lots of fixes from these and other forums. The specific error message I get when using win7 diagnostic on the adapter is:
Ip config error: doesn't have a valid ip configuration
So the ultimate question is if the hardware is ok, why does my desktop refuse to work with the same connection that works perfectly on my laptop.
Thanks for any help, I'm at a loss and anxious to finally figure out what is going on here.

If you can post your ipconfig /all of the problem machine while it's connected that might help to figure out this problem.

Btw removed the check for Ipv6 as part of the troubleshooting attempts with the tech from the ISP, in case you wanted me to turn that on for the ipconfig.
Can you repeat the command on your laptop so that we can compare the results.

And yes you should re-enable IPv6.
The second picture shows a working connection although your default gateway isn't normal, it should be something like 192.168.X.X depending on the type of router? Although in iceland using one of those combo router-modems this might be normal, not sure.
You might try entering the default gateway 192.168.1.254 manually into your IPv4 properties window.
I have currently disabled, the new NIC I bought to see if it was my onboard Lan. It was able to get a bit further by showing I was connected to the internet but not loading any pages. I'll try to recreate that again to get some more useful ipconfig all for you.
It might help to reset winsock and the TCP/IP stack.
Try running these commands at your command prompt run as admin.
Try running these commands at your command prompt run as admin.
netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)
Do you have anything from apple or adobe installed like iTunes or adobe photo suite?
Currently on my trendnet nic, attempted the fix you suggested (which I think the tech tried) without any success. It just shows unidentified network and the red X to the internet.
No luck with the netsh commands, had tried that before but no luck, repeated it now with no luck as well.
I'm going to disable my expansion NIC and stay with the onboard during this troubleshoot for consistancy as it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.

Found some settings and silly stuff I did (ping'ed myself) when I did once get the onboard lan to detect the network and seemingly look as if I was in working order. Maybe some of this can shed some light on things, or complicate things.

Try manually setting your configuration. With reference to the image that chev65 posted and the ipconfig information from you, the settings required are shown below.
It looks like 192.168.71 is the current IP although at this point it's a static IP and shouldn't matter much.
The question is why isn't this machine picking up the DHCP assignment from the router.

No luck on the static settings. The link I had which did connect to the router happened last week, have not been able to replicate that since.
This computer software wise is bare bones, fresh win7 ultimate and other than win firewall there is no other software, I even removed anti virus in case it was meddling somehow.
But yeah like you said why isn't this router able to communicate with the desktop, it works perfectly at another home and works perfectly here with my laptop.

Ok at least we have narrowed it down a bit. The only good ipconfig was from last week so the last ipconfig /all you posted was from then.
With these Nvidia chipsets they can go wacky at times and often they require a cmos clear in order to come back to life. I have the same chipset and have fixed problems like this a few times by just clearing the cmos. I'll assume that you are using the latest Nvidia chipset drivers.
Have you tried clearing the cmos yet?

Ahh we might have something there, the cmos battery was recently replaced. I had also issues with adding new ram which a new battery in the cmos fixed.
Let me take the battery out and jumper it, is it good enough to jumper clear for a minute with the battery in and start up the comp again. Just making sure I'm doing it right.
I'll reconfirm my chipset drivers, quite confident they are the correct ones but at this point triple checking is needed.

Ok we might be getting somewhere now. If you remove the battery be sure and reset the bios time/date and make sure that other settings are correct.
You should only need to clear the cmos at this point but be sure and note any special settings or required settings like memory and other settings so you can set them back again.
Does this board have two eithernet inputs on the back of the board?

cmos clear didn't work, didn't remove the battery however.
But I know the cmos did clear, had to fix some bios settings.
Checking out the drivers on the chipset now.

Hmm under device manager, computer > I have ACPI x64 based PC with a 2006 driver. That seems really wrong or am I high.
Also under ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards - ASUS M3N72-D
Am I only looking to grab the chipset drivers? Its a beta to boot.

Hmm no net on the desktop, so can't use that unless theres a dl'able version?
Yes that may present some problems getting those drivers, I'm surprized the Windows 7 default drivers aren't working better.
I still have no idea what this system is "system specs" or why it once worked and now doesn't work. I would need your system specs to find a driver.
Could be as simple as hardware failure but that is less common of a problem.

Which still begs the question, why did it work fine at my brothers. Damn computers lol.
Yes it's very confusing I agree, router firmware-driver compatibility comes to mind.
This board should be working and it shows the correct Nvidia driver updated and should work.
http://ca.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=8jYT1euVL4wCyH04
Not so sure about the router though.

Drivers didn't help.
So maybe try a full windows reinstall, then if it doesn't work time to buy a new motherboard?

I would go with the reinstall at this point, if the same problem appears then the boards eithernet or chipset is messed up or something.
Running the command sfc /scannow command might be helpful or you can try a start up repair or a repair install from the Windows CD.

Cool, I'll get the reinstall done tonight and post progress tomorrow, thanks again for all the help so far.
i noticed your subnet mask setting is different for each machine, but its probably not that simple. every machine i've used, the setting is 255.255.255.0
Yes kword the default gateway, IP and subnet are all messed up. Dwarf already posted the correct subnet for the static ip but to no avail.
Those Thompson modem-routers are suspect and finding updated firmware can be a real chore.
I don't know much about them because they don't sell them here in the US but I have seen many complaints about them not working right with Windows 7.

Damn, I was hoping not to hear that about the router, I moved here recently from Canada and have never heard of them either.
Preconfigured routers are completely new to me.

The fact that this machine already worked at your brothers house and probably with a different router tends to point to a router or modem problem. But I'm really not familor with the settings on that router so it's hard to say for sure. Seemed like most of the reported problems were with 64 bit Op systems.
What is your ISP?
ISP is Einstaklingar | Vefur Smans
Unfortunately, my Icelandic is non-existant. However, we have another member who is Icelandic, so I've asked him for assistance.
In the meantime, what I am after, and the reason why I asked for the name of your ISP, is to get the relevant information for configuring a router in order to be able to work with the ISP. Given that your system connects without problems at your brother's and that your router works with your laptop leads me to think that your current router isn't, for some reason, compatible with your system.

Thanks Dwarf! If you need me to get some info from my ISP let me know, I can get the ball rolling with them.
Can you enter your router configuration? This, from my router's configuration page, shows the information required (outlined in red).

hey follow these steps. Let me know what happened next. before we begin, make sure all the values are back to default. e.g. ip address needs to be dynamic, rather then static, meaning obtain ip automatically and all the other options.
1) Check tharoughly your network cable, if the cmriping and cable is fine.
2) if the wired connection is working on your laptop.
3) unplug the wire from there and plug it into your desktop.
4) make sure you have the latest driver for your lan card.
5) i see your ip 6 is enabled, disable it. Also i see that you have apipa 169 address.
6) if you have windows 7 or vista run command prompt as an administrator. with windows xp just run it, once you in command prompt, type IPCONFIG /RELEASE, then type IPCONFIG /RENEW, Then type IPCONFIG /RELEASE again.
7) turn off your computer, when your computer is turning off, turn off your router and then modem. (WAIT FOR 5 MINS ATLEAST)
8) turn on your modem, wait for 3 mins, turn on your router, wait for 3 mins. turn on your computer. check your internet connection.
9) if it still fails, update the firmware for your router.
10) disable windows firewall.
11) if it still fails, restart your computer, under safe mode with networking using f8 key, test your connection there.
12) Since its a dsl connection, make sure you have appropiate options selected in router. checkout if your isp has a user name and password for login or their login works on subnet mask, if so then, plug the wire into working computer clone the subnet mask of working computer onto your router and unplug he wire and plug i into the non working computer and try the internet on non working computer.
13) if still fails do an OSRI (reinstall the operating system).
14) still fails? get a new lancard for pci slot, which is much cheapter then the motherboard.

Can't seem to find that info on the router's config/info screens. Should I just email tech support and get that from them?

The above: I was able to connect from school no problem, that info is the ipconfig all from there, I don't know if it helps any, the problem still seems to be the router from my ISP. Inquiring about other routers to test this possibility out.
Update. Switched routers, different model but still Thompson, now speedtouch 585.
For some odd reason I found the home network after it sat there for about 10 mins while I was doing some reading, I had made changes but nothing took until about 10 mins later, weird stuff.
So now I'm connected, but the old problem of extremely slow connection and being stuck on waiting for website is occuring, here is the info I could gather from this latest half connection.

From what I can see here the Nvidia adaptor isn't picking up the default gateway but the realtec PCI adaptor seems to be working. Although you can't use both at once. Maybe if you enable the Nvidia adaptor and disable the realtec PCI nic it will work better.
Just posting what I just did, before I read your post lol.
I uninstalled the onboard LAN, rebooted > bios disabled onboard Lan.
In Windows the PCI ethernet could not find the network.
Disabled the card, restarted and enabled onboard LAN and onboard LAN romchip.
In windows, same problems, unidentified network. How I managed to get the expansion PCI to find the home network before is a mystery, hell this whole situation is bizarre.
I'm not sure where to go from here.

I would remove the PCI adaptor from the PCI slot and try using just the onboard Nvidia eithernet adaptor for now. The Nvidia adaptor is working in post #43.
This is a tough one no doubt.

Well I've decided to switch ISPs to the same one my brother uses which worked perfectly with this problematic desktop.
I'll report back if it doesn't work, but I doubt that will be an issue. Shame the tech's at my current ISP couldn't figure it out.

Well if this is an ISP problem that is about the only way to fix it. Seems like it would work since you already tested that ISP at your brothers house.
