Custom startup ? part 1

sergiogarcia9

Hi, At the moment i cant find any way to use my own sound startup in Windows 7 RC1 ? is this possible ? any advice appreciated

copernicus

Yes you can but only with wav. files. here's a converter from MP3 to wav. Convert MP3 to WAV

sergiogarcia9

Isn't it the "Windows Logon" that you see if you scroll down a little?

copernicus

copernicus: yes you click on it and select browse select the file you want to be played instead (ONLY WAV. FILES) and it should work smooth.

Mark

Thanks guys ... yes works with logon but i don't use logon just startup and thats the sound I'm trying to replace

Guest

It's probably built into some dll according to this on vista:

How-To: Changing the Windows Vista Startup Sound — The NeoSmart Files

Guest

Thanks copernicus (hugs) i will look in to this

Guest

Yes it's in the shell32.dll in system32, you will need to use a resource hacker to open it and then you can replace it with your own, you may need to take ownership of it and give yourself full permissions to be able to save it.

Guest

Hi Mr GRiM, i downloaded ResHack and will have a look at it in the morning, thank you for the info

Guest

Er think i may just leave it

Dark Nova Gamer

Try..

C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll

Dark Nova Gamer

Hi DarkNovaGundam, I did try as your post but got >

Orbital Shark

Okay I figured it out, instead of typing it in, navigate through it.. (don't type in C:/Windows/System32/Shell32.dll, it won't find it.)

Steps

1. Make ResHacker see all files.
Attachment 16422
2. Open C: Drive
3. Open Windows Folder
4. Open System 32 Folder
5. Search for Shell32.dll

It should work that way.

Hope that helps , works for me in ResHacker 3.4.0

Dark Nova Gamer

Thank you DarkNovaGundam, i will try as you say, my ver is 3.4.0.79

Its pretty easy
goto cpl>sound>windows> start up sound. look at the snip. browse to the botton and find your way to the sound you want

Hi Cindy,

Just to add, you need to run ResHacker as Administrator in order for it to save & open the files correctly. Or at least I have to

Dark Nova Gamer

I have got as far as Shell32.dll... erm stuck now help please ?

Mark

Well I just searched the ENTIRE shell32.dll, I couldn't find the start-up sounds. I'm guessing its located elsewhere.

Mark

OK i will try and find out where it is

Guest

Sorry I told you the wrong place to look, it is actually the imageres.dll you wanted.

Hey C
hello again let me try doing this from memory. In reshack there is an action menu. On that menu there is a replace resource ( i think) If so then replace 1033 with the file you want. I did it in vista for the xp sound, many months ago.

Hope this helps a little

ken

Guest

Thanks honey will do that

Guest

As long as you have something else in wave format then you should be able to replace it but make sure you have taken ownership of imageres.dll or you will not be able to save it, plus it's a good idea to make a backup of it as well in case something does go wrong.

If you still cant replace it because it tells you it's in use then you may have to find another way to replace it.

You could try saving it as a different name and then drag the original to the desktop and then rename the new one.

With all my customizing I have dual boot with vista and I usually boot up vista to make all my alterations to windows 7.

Hi

Im dual booting with XP Pro SP3, i will try drag n drop (i have a wav file ready but got stuck here (not sure what to fill in) >

you doing this from xp or win 7? If from xp you should be able to drag and drop cause the file ins't in use (like MrGrim said) if from win 7 i seem to remember you have to fill in file type, name, and language. type is wav (?), name is what your new file is called, and language (i forget) english?

Someone will have that resource. Make a backup in case

Ken

Mark

If you can you should install Restorator, you can get a free trial for 30 days and it will let you open the dll and then you can just drag the new wave straight onto the folder and save and your done.

Download Trial Version - Restorator - Bome Software

Dark Nova Gamer

Im doing it in Windows 7, so i will have a go

Dark Nova Gamer

Ooooo thank you Mr GRiM will try that

Guest

Well I'm totally Pd off with Res-hacker (i get a message saying the file has been changed, i reboot and i still get the Windows tune ) anyway I'm going to download Mr GRiMs suggestion and try that today.

Guest

Are you using x86 or x64, if you are using x64 then you will also have to modify the imageres.dll in SysWOW64 as well.

Guest

Soz went for a shower, x86 - 32bit, now do i install Restorator in XP Pro or Windows 7 RC1 ? Mr GRiM (thanks for help )

Guest

I'd try the default OS. To find the default OS just..

1. Open Start
2. Type: msconfig
3. Hit enter on your keyboard
4. Switch to the boot tab and it should say somewhere in the top box default OS

Guest

K used msconfig a lot, default is Windows 7 ... because its on separate HDD to XP Pro.

That is as im in Windows 7 ATM

Okay if thats the case, which OS is on HDD1?

Dark Nova Gamer

XP Pro is on HDD-0, so install to that ?

Dark Nova Gamer

Hmm.. tricky, I'd try XP first since it is HDD0 (ment 0 in last post, not 1 lol). If that doesn't work try it on 7 then.

Dark Nova Gamer

OK will do that bit L8r 2day (need to sleep first) thanks hon

Mark

There is a new word, knakered =P

Well sleep well and let us know if it works with XP or not.

Guest

Just to confirm this, yes you would be better off installing on XP as that would mean that none of the Windows 7 files are in use and you can then gain full access to alter them from XP and you will probably need to take ownership again from XP.

The other alternative is install Restorator on Windows 7 and make a copy of imageres.dll on your desktop and make the changes you want and save it and then put in in the c:/ directory for easy access, then load XP and replace the original.

Always make sure you have backed it up somewhere incase you have any problems and system restore points are always useful as well.

Guest

Restorator don't seem to be able to do the change, i can place the Wave file i want to use in to the WAVE folder but it wont overwrite the Windows 7 Startup Sound and if i try to delete the windows Sound it deletes the whole folder, so looks like i need to install Restorator to Windows 7 ?

Is Restorator not replacing the file on startup because the file to replace is on another Hard Drive ?

Guest

From the look of your screen shot, you have saved it but it's not replacing the original and instead it has saved it as imageres1.dll and I can also see another one there with imageres2.dll, what this means is that you haven't taken ownership of the file you are trying to replace and given yourself full control.

Download the Take ownership context menu shortcut and right click on imageres.dll and select Take Ownership from the menu and then you should be able to save it.

Take Ownership Shortcut

Guest

apologies for the late reply Mr GRiM, Thank you i will be trying this again in the morning

Thanks Cindy X
