Problem with installing drivers for GeForce 9600M GT part 1

Hi Guys.
I've got a problem with installing drivers for GeForce 9600M GT. I've installed windows 7 build 7264 x86, and after installation my display adatper is Standard VGA. This's a bit strange becouse when i have a beta 7000, and 7100 it automatically goes for windwos update and get correct drivers.
I've downloaded latest drivers from Nvidia (186.03) but it wont install with message that it cant find drivers for my hardware.
I've tried nvidia auto scannig, with no result. Also tried installing drivers manually with update driver, and uninstalling standard vga drivers in safe mode, but after restart it automatically install standard vga drivers even in safe mode...

I have MSI Gx630 Laptop.

I'm having the same problem with my 9600M GT card but with Win7 64-bit. Though, the autoscan on nVidia's website does find my card and recommends the 186.03 driver.

Install and run this http://files.getdropbox.com/u/976813/drivermax.exe once installed, create an account, and they will send you a free reg key, then let it find the driver for you. I went thru the same issue with drivers, and it took care of it for me.

Tried that and all it found was the Standard VGA Adapter and said I have the most recent driver

Have you tried the latest notebook driver from nVidia? I have a 8600M GT and I have to get mine from there. 9600M GT and 8600M GT have very little differences between the two so try that

And where might I find that? The drivers CD that came with the PC has the chipset for 32-bit installation but it won't install for a 64-bit installation.

Yep, tried that but it won't install. When I try and install it manually, it finds the hardware but then says the driver isn't compatible with tuis version of Windows, even though nVidia's website says it is.

im runnign as 9600mgt, i downlaoded my drivers manually, it worked fine, if the Win 7 ones dont work, try the Vista ones.

32-bit or 64-bit? And when you say you downloaded them manually, do you mean you installed them manually by going through Properties in the Device Manager and then browsing your computer for the nvdm file? nVidia's website shows the same driver for Vista and Win7 unless I'm missing something??

So what is not working. I am confused why the 186.03 for notebooks will not work...

If you are running this install, and it is really not installing the driver maybe contact the hardware manufacturer.

The only othert thing I can suggest is if the install fails, go in to the device manager and find the vga adapter and point it to C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\186.03\English for the driver and tell it to use that...

I download the 186.03 directly from nVidia's website and then run the setup file. The program starts and unpacks all the driver files. The nVidia screen comes up but then I get an error message saying that no hardware can be found. So, I try to do the install manually by going into Device Manager and pointing it to the nvdm file and then I get an error message indicating that the driver was found but it's not compatible with this version of Windows, even though it's the Win7 64-bit driver.

Maybe your GPU Is faulty? i dont see any reason why it shouldnt install, and as for the x86/x64, run the one that coresponds with your OS, as in, x64 driver for x64, and x86 Driver for x86.

Works fine with Vista 64-bit so it's something specific to Win7 64-bit.

just install off cd in safe mode.....thats all thats needed. i had the same prob with graphics driver. no problems with install after doing it this way....it just worked for me. no harm in trying.

as in the .exe file, which installs your driver, try that in safe mode

I would just force your video card to use that driver by selecting it from he device manager and pointing it tot he extracted file. That is, it is truly the correct driver and card.

Go into DM->click on properties of the device->hit update driver->Browse my computer->let me pick from a list of all devices->hit next->click have disk->browse to the location of where nVidia stored the installer files for the driver->choose the inf (you will see it appear when you hit that folder)

OK yes, already tried that multiple times, both in normal mode and in safe mode. According to the error message, the driver doesn't support this version of Windows. This, despite the fact that the driver is for Win7 64-bit. For the heck of it, I tried the Vista 64-bit driver and the result was the same.

This issue has me perplexed...all of our suggestions and know issues have failed...now unless I haven't read right, are you still using the RC? Have you tried a newer build?

Yes, Win7 RC 64-bit. Downloaded it last week so I imagine it's the most recent update. The card works fine under Vista 64-bit.

Try using Windows 7 7264 x64 or 7600.16385 x64...

But if you force the driver (select have disk and navigate to the file) it still says you cannot install it? I thought you could totally force any driver, regardless.

I thought that as well but no go. It throws a message that the driver isn't compatible with this version of Windows; i.e., Windows 7 RC 64-bit. I tried Build 7600 and the results are the same. I think I'm giving up and will end up deleting my Win7 partiton. Stinks because I really like what MS has done with Win7!

Anyone have any other ideas??

any luck finding a solution to this? is weird, i had no problem with win7 x64 build 7264, now i went back to 7100 x86 and no video drivers, just a generic vga driver from microsoft...

im trying tho. if i find something i'll come back and post it

well i got to a temp fix. using microsoft drivers for other than generic. Windows has its own set of nvidia drivers(as well as ati and others) u have to go to device manager>click on video card > properties> update driver>search for a driver on your System(or something like that, my win is in spanish , so second choice)> pick on a list of drivers on my computer(second choice again)> uncheck compatible hardware> then pick a driver. I picked a driver for 9600 gt not 9600m gt and it has been working good last couple of hours, ima have to try with heavy and soft games to check out this drivers...

hope i got to help, and sorry, haven't spoken english in a while so i got a lot of mistakes there...

i actually gave up thx tho ima just have to w8 untill final release comes out(as much as i don't like vista) i've tried 2 different builds of seven and no luck with them 7254 and 7100 64 and 32... its a shame it looked sooooooo nice and fast, even my cpu temp got a bit lower...

7-7-I have not yet nvidia drivers install (186.xx) current when the test notice, really work.

You might simply try:
1.. locate the adapter - delete -yes delete and reboot. Win7 will locate and install the proper driver. if for some reason your mobo will not accept.
2. go to the mobo site. download and install driver from the MSI site.
2a. MSI also has a program with which you can find-locate-and auto install the proper driver(s). I do recommend if #1 fails you should revert to #2.
3. If this fails, obtain a proper download for 7600 RTM via MSDN or Technet or MS. since v.7264 is still Beta.

I am also having a problem with installing drivers for the Geforce 9600m GT card. I recently installed windows 7 professional 64 bit system up from windows RC (can't remember what built). I have a BenQ S42, it came with the card installed and with vista 32 bit system.
The driver properties says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" but when I try to update the driver it says that it is up to date.
Any help is most welcome thanks.

i had this same problem with my new Dell XPS One 24 (NVIDIA 9600M GT) that i wiped and installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on right after i got it. all i could get to work was the standard VGA adapter that wouldn't even support screen savers or windows media center. none of the drivers i downloaded from NVIDIA or dell would work, even after pointing to the specific INF file manually.

the main problem is that the NVIDIA drivers that you download from their site are designed for an attached graphics card, not an integrated one, at least that's what i've gathered from the research i've done. it seems that all the notebooks and mobile hybrid pc's these days that have integrated GPUs on the motherboards have specific hardware ID's for the cards that aren't recognized by the generic NVIDIA drivers.

here's what i did to solve the problem, it's risky but it worked.

1) Download the Dell video drivers specific to your machine, even though they obviously won't work. You need the INF file from Dell that has the device ID located in it.

2) Extract the dell drivers and find the device ID in the INF file. Just search for the string SUBSYS and that will locate it.

3) Download the 186.81 drivers setup file from nvidia and run it to extract the files.

4) Go to the ListDevices.txt file in the display directory and find the device ID under the NVDM.INF section. This part was a little tricky because my graphics card was listed in a bunch of different sections. I did a little research on the internet and came to the conclusion that NVDM.INF is for Dell Mobile cards which is what mine is.

5) Replace all instances of the device ID in NVDM.INF (there should be just 2 instances) with the device ID located in the INF file extracted from the Dell drivers. Mine was in the format DEV_XXXX&SUBSYS_YYYYYYYY and the only difference in the two ID's was the YYYYYYYY number.

6) Go through the process of updating the driver by browsing for it and searching for the driver software in the location of the NVDM.INF file you just edited.

7) Reboot the machine after it's done and pray that it comes back up without any problems.

the bottom line is that the NVIDIA drivers on NVIDIA's site are the right ones, but none of the INF files have the hardware specific PCI device ID's for your hardware and so Windows won't be able to recognize any of the drivers as being correct. what i did using the steps above was just add the device ID specific to my hardware to the INF file manually so Windows would recognize it and install it.

UPDATE:

after further research, it turns out that i needed to use the NVAM.INF file instead. i had a few problems using the NVDM.INF file. according to the documentation on PCI device ID' in the link above, the second 4 digits in the subsystem ID (SUBSYS_XXXXYYYY) corresponds to the vendor ID. this vendor ID is important. when i downloaded and extracted the device drivers from Dell's website for my machine, the subsystem ID from the NVDD.INF file in those drivers was 90131043. i searched for all instances of 1043 in the ListDevices.txt file and the only sections where my 9600M GT was listed was in the NVAM.INF section, which according to the web is for ASUS computers, not sure what the deal with that is. there were 4 different lines in that section for my video card, probably for different motherboard configurations. i had no idea which one to choose so i picked the first one, figuring if i had to i'd try each one till one worked. so, i edited the NVAM.INF file and replaced the subsystem ID of the line i picked with the one from dell's driver file. i then repeated the process of updating the drivers manually and now i am not experiencing any problems. hopefully this is it, but i'll have to wait and see.

before i did each of these driver installs i created a restore point just in case. obviously, this is extremely important.

risky like you might BSOD on boot up and never get back into windows. i always perform restore points in system restore before doing any of these risky maneuvers. so far i've manually updated my drivers twice and only had one BSOD but my machine booted back up just fine.

I have tried installing with the card in then reinstalled windows without the card in and restarted put the card in and the drivers bump'd right in and hide my card? Any help?????

It is compatible with Windows 7, so need to ask? since your specs are very lacking.
1. what version of Win7?
2. Version in like FULL ISO (technet- MSDN)
3. Downloaded from what site?
4. Verified by MD5?

MSI has a nice program that will find the DRIVER your mobo should be using. MSI also is touchy about drivers and signatures.
recommend you use the MSI Drivers.

the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT is an attached video card on the Dell XPS One A2420. I can't understand why Dell did not provide a driver for 64 bit. All the other drivers for this machine are capable of 32 and 64 bit. Also, it looks like Dell has stopped production of this model. I don't think we will get much support from them on this issue.

Solved the problem. I am now running in 64 bit with the latest Nvidia driver with no errors at all. I am using ver 195.81 beta and have also used 195.62. I edited the listdevices.txt and the NVAM.INF files. If you e-mail me at edel.berto@live.com, I will send you the files. Just replace the files you have now in the Nvidia directory with these and run setup again. Running Aero with no problems. This applies to Dell XPS One A2420 only!
