start up slow and how to speed up comp part 1

Wicca

my computer starts up mega slow like 2 mins any way to speed this up i have no start up items just AV also i tweaked my registry if that is the problem what setting would cause this and also could i have lots of ways to speed up my computer all the ways
you techs know would really love that thanks

Petey7

Here's a couple of tutorials to get you started. Which tweaks you use are entirely up to you.

Desktop and Shutdown Tweaks Combined
Optimize Windows 7

Wicca

Here's a tip. Don't do ANY reg tweaks.

Lemur

Win7 does not require tweaks. It will work against you in almost every case in the long run.

I uncheck everything in msconfig>Startup except AV and gadgets. Make sure you have the latest drivers in Device Manager: check optional Windows Updates and the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device.

Work through repeat errors in Event Viewer>Admin View by googling the text and ID number to find solution.

Clean and order the HD monthly using state-of-the-art CCleaner and Auslogics Disk and REgistry defraggers.

Wicca

Mellon has it right - no reg tweaks. And if you can't help it, back up your registry.
You can check your bios settings.

Wicca

check the bios for what and also any ways to help speed up the computer and i i already tweaked a long time ago so what can i do to speed up my computer and help make my computer run fast and to make my cpu perform at it's best

Wicca

also greg rocker i did that with the event viewer but never seem to find a fix and the drivers that do not load are drivers that i do not need but always are in my even viewer as an error

Guest

Which drivers? If they are erroring in Event Viewer then their absence is affecting performance. I would install them anyway, or disable the device in Device Manager.

Troubleshooting in the Event logs is an intuitive process that involves googling the error text and identification numbers to read as much as you can find until you understand the error enough to tackle it and take it down. I have sometimes had as many as a dozen chronic errors which took me from a day to several months to finally resolve. Some will even become apparent to be harmless.

Guest

i will post them when i find them coz i do not have my computer with me as you might know and i know one of the drivers is
nvstor32 that failed to load

whs

The most dramatic improvement you can get by installng a SSD for the OS. Boot times of 15 to 20 seconds are typical for a SSD configuration.

Wicca

i have two SSD

If you have your OS on a SSD (e.g. an OCZ Vertex or a 2G Intel) and the boot time is still 2 minutes, then there is something seriously wrong. I suggest you have a look at this thread to determine at which part of the boot process the holdup is.

Wicca

i mean it takes two mins to reach the desktop

Yeah, but that is too long. There are really 2 phases:

1. the part that the BIOS needs including the BIOS splash screen
2. the part that starts with "Windows Starting" and the colored windmill which is the OS boot until the internet connection is available.

You have to distinguish between those 2 phases because the problems of a possible delay will have completely different causes.
On my system (OCZ Vertex, 4GB, Q6600) 1+2 take about 36 seconds whilst 2 alone is less than 15 seconds.

Bill2

Is your boot drive near the top of the boot priority list in the bios or near the bottom? If you have the system set to look for a LAN or a USB drive first, that consumes precious seconds. Also, if you have a lot of external devices plugged in all the time, boot can slow down.

BTW, your bios is dated 2007. Looks kinda old to me. Look around for an update.

Another thing. You can create a new account and try logging on to it. If it logs on quicker, then it may be a corrupted profile.

mw2

Looks like you have NVidia chipset which often times needs the full download rather than just what Win7 installer gives.

Make sure you have the latest Nvidia update from 1) optional Windows Updates or 2) the Support Downloads webpage for your computer model, or 3)http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx. Same with display driver or any others that error out.

Wicca

I think that the best software you are looking for is definately CCleaner!

Just remove all startup programs!

Petey7

Do you have Daemon Tools installed? Daemon Tools does not work well with 7 and it is a good idea to remove it if you do have it.

madtownidiot

open task manager and post a list of running processes at startup.. that will help. You could try disconnecting all peripheral hardware (printers, webcams, external drives, etc) and disabling everything in the startup tab of MSconfig. That alone should cut your boot time to less than a minute. Then start reattaching hardware and enabling startup items in msconfig one at a time and restarting until your boot time slows down again and you will have the source of your problems.

Wicca

i do not have daemon tools but how come that thing comes up about the drive

Wicca

aso mad town i only have one thing in start up and 30 processess in task manager so and other idea's
why does this come up i do not have daemon tools anymore
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
sptd

Petey7

Not having Daemon tools, and not having it anymore a little different. For some reason, your computer is still trying to run the driver for it at startup. For the first time in my life, I'm going to recommend trying Ccleaner. It might remove any registry entries, files, etc. the was left behind when Daemon Tools was removed.

Wicca

ok fixed the sptd problem thanks now here is another

You'll have to disable it from the services list in MSconfig, then delete it from the registry in order to get rid of it completely, which can be accomplished with a simple search in regedit for instances of sptd

Petey7

I would make sure the SPTD problem is actually fixed. If it is fixed, have you noticed in change in boot time/

Wicca

it is fixed it was not by daemon tool it was another company i got a tool off there website that got rid of sptd but did not notice a difference and sptd is not appearing in the ev any more so that tells me it has been removed
now here is something esle

I have one idea. Go into bios and switch from AHCI to IDE, and see if you still have the problem.

Every where I look, people say that switching to IDE solves the problem.

It's the same as the last one you posted. Try switching to IDE mode of you can.

also i went into bios looked everywhere and cannot find it AHCI OR IDE

Wicca

also many people say doing this fixes the problem
Goto Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System
Click on "Advanced System Settings" on the left panel
Under "Startup and Recovery" select "Settings"
Make sure you have a check mark beside "Write and event to the system log"
but if i tick it and click ok i went back to it and it was unticked it seems it will not let me tick it

Petey7

I read about that and I'm trying to figure out this work around I found. This person did wrote it very clearly.

Petey7

I this point I would try opening an elevated command prompt and running SFC /SCANNOW.

If that doesn't fix anything, a repair install might.

Wicca

a repair install would take 7 hours forget it any other options why can't i tick the box why does it untick

Petey7

Did you at least try SFC /SCANNOW?

Seriously, a lot of what I've read suggest a clean install. I figure a repair install might have to same effect without you having to reinstall all your programs.

7 hours? - how come?

madtownidiot

if your bios isn't up to date, do that first, and you might not have the same errors after reinstalling windows, but I think Petey7 is right when he says you may have to reinstall windows.

I'm glad you asked this first because I was wondering. Two SSDs in a raid setup shouldn't take that long. Many people report 4 hours with a regular HDD.

madtownidiot

It shouldn't take more than 30-40 minutes, an hour at the most.

Wicca

my hdd are do not support raid in the bios it is disabled by default as it came from the factory
also i mean when i upgraded to win7 it took 6 hours

Wicca

also updating the bios is tricky i am not a brill at computers also i seen the update and it does not improve my system

Wicca

sorry also i do not think my drive is a solid state drive is there any way to make it a ssd and how can i know if it is

Petey7

Did you install the full NVIDIA chipset from the Downloads page for your computer model, or Nvidia? I suggested this two days ago.

This should solve the NVSTOR error.

Also check the Device Manager to see if any devices are in error with an (!) exclamation mark shown. Chances are your full Nvidia chipset was not provided by the installer and needs to be downloaded and installed.

If this doesn't solve your problem then you need to run the Repair Install as a last resort before clean reinstalling. I have never heard of a Repair install taking 7 hours, or even 2 hours.

Wicca

+1 on everything Greg said. When the guys right, he's right.

Also, you specifically stated that you had two SSDs. I assumed you meant a RAID setup. Looking back, you didn't mention RAID, so that was my mistake. But now I'm wondering, do you have a SSD or not? What you have listed under hard drives in your specs looks like a Seagate model number.

I suggest taking another look in BIOS for a IDE and AHCI setting. I can't remember off the top of my head where the setting is in my BIOS off the top of my head. If you still can't find the setting (some people don't have it) then do the repair install.

Wicca

no i can find it IDE and AHCI setting also i thought it was a ssd but maybe it is not

Wicca

my computer can't read my windows 7 disc so thanks but looks like i will just have to leave it

Guest

i only see a IDE setting ui think my drive is a SATA

Wicca

there is a IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers does that mean it is A IDE HDD

also i notice that when i go into hibernate on the computer it say
in the evcent viewer just before it shuts in hibernate

Petey7

I think the other members are more likely to of help to you. I've done about all i can do. Listen to midtown and greg have to say.

Petey7

You bring up the nvstor error for the third time and now this is the third time I am responding that you need to install the full NVidia chipset as the Win7 installer doesn't always provide all of its component drivers.

I cannot look up the chipset for you on the Packard Bell website because there is no such model number listed as what you have posted in your Specs. You'll need to determine the correct model number and go to the Packard Bell Support Downloads webpage, search for your model computer to download and install (as Admin) the chipset.

If the chipset is not avaialble on the Downloads page for your computer model, you'll need to determine what exact chipset your computer has and download it from NVidia Downloads webpage to install.

Exactly what happens when you try to run the Win7 Repair install? Does it give you an error message? Try opening the disk in Explorer to rightclick Setup then Run as Administrator. If it will still not run, where did you get the DVD? Did you burn it yourself? Try burning another using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

If you have any questions about how to complete any of these steps then please ask back so some progress can be made.

linuzo

Link to the Packard Bell download page: Support Download

As Greg said, there is no computer on there site with that model number, and google searching just tells me that is might be a iPower series computer.

madtownidiot

Hey there I had the same problem, the Acer computer I recently bought was not listed on the acer website either maybe it was counterfeit who knows.. haha just kidding these manufacturers probably have better stuff to do then add these low end computers on their website. So anyways I downloaded the nforce drivers from Nvidia and had it detect the settings all together. Now the nforce drivers and nvidia video drivers were not in the same package as I had to download 2 different versions and install the video drivers seperately.

Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Also, if you want to speed up your computer thats easy!! Buy more RAM!! or buy a computer that is not made by HP because that just = Huge Problem.. These are made for convenience for non computer literate people. hense people that say., where is the start button? Or where is the Windows Pearl? Anyways take our advise if this doesnt help you then all I can say is only God can help you.

Cheers.

madtownidiot

Best thing anyone can do for a new HP is wipe the HDD and reinstall windows minus any HP apps.. that alone will do more for its speed than almost any hardware upgrade

Guest

Agreed. Just the HP connection manager alone adds up to 30 seconds to boot time. Win7 has much better built-ins of all the HP utilities.

Make your HP Recovery Disks first as you can extract needed apps (like Works - audit key from HD using Belarc Advisor) from Recov Disks using this: http://www.sevenforums.com/installat...tml#post488270

Guest

really, they're nothing more than a duplication of native windows functions with a different UI..
