Just a tip if you convert it to an editable poly first then extrude certain polygons then bevel them down you can get a really cool look. I'll try and make a tutorial for you one of these days but here is two good sites for tutorials.

OK I am telling you what I have done here ... extremely simple .

First of all I took a basic shape and applied extrude as you have shown me earlier . Applied the lights ... one from top, and two for two top corners . Adjusted the colors . Now copied that shape in front of the first, exploded it until I am satisfied with the look , Lightened the color , and took a multipass render . Edited the glows with photoshop later .

actualy its only 1 line that goes from the right to the left behing the win logo...

The curve behind the logo ? You can do it with pen tool . Make the Path in a new layer, stroke path with brush .... size of brush being smallest , say two ; apply glow .

The bold line below the logo may be done with the same technique , with the stroke brush size being comparatively bigger .

I think you've done a nice job pal. Unfortunately it looks like you've used PS for the whole design.
I would have gone the vector route and used CorelDraw. But there's a nice quick and easy PS tutorial to make the wordpress logo over here if you want to give it a go how to make a wordpress logo
I don't know if you use Corel but if you would like me to make a CorelDraw tutorial to achieve the same results just let me know.

I think you've done a nice job pal. Unfortunately it looks like you've used PS for the whole design.
I would have gone the vector route and used CorelDraw. But there's a nice quick and easy PS tutorial to make the wordpress logo over here if you want to give it a go how to make a wordpress logo
I don't know if you use Corel but if you would like me to make a CorelDraw tutorial to achieve the same results just let me know.

Fantastic tutorial It is something close what was in my imagination. But shortened the steps a bit for the circle parts, I dont know if its "against the rule". I made one, copied twice; made outer and inner slanted circles from it (stacked it below the ring facing us). I was not aware of this site; thank you very much for the link

Nick mate, the tutorial link you gave plus the videos you created is really helpful. I saw something like this in some website logo and created it. As you can guess the last steps of adding the reflection is done in PS. I am just a starter so...have done that cheat

OK GFX geeks, now a request from a demanding customer Be patient with me, this takes time to explain.

I have always used themes with one wallpaper only, I do not like my wallpaper changing all the time. The wallpaper must please my eye, be calm and balanced. I don't have any desktop icons, but I like (and need) my gadgets and Sticky Notes. They have they custom places, staying always on the same place.

At the moment I have a wallpaper which I like very much. The screenshot here shows that wall and the gadgets & Sticky notes where I want to have them. The pic also shows where and how big my taskbar is:



When I ordered my current sig from PooMan UK, I asked him to include stylished orbs of the Finnish and German flags and Windows logo. I asked him to make it dark, and that the sig should have elements of two of my favourite "hobbies", single malt whisky and cigar or smoke of a cigar.

IMO, PooMan did excellent job.

So: I would like to have a wallpaper, based at least partially on the current one and it's colours, with the same elements I have in my sig (except the Seven Forums badges, any text and those green leaves on the left which are there only for Christmas). If you feel there's too many elements to include, making the wall messy, leave rather those orbs out but include cigar and whisky.

Here's the current wall alone, without taskbar and gadgets:



Here are some pics of Laphroiag Single Malt, my favourite whisky, if you feel you could use one of them even partly. Googling Laphroiag gives thousands of more pics to choose:





Finally, if you choose to use an image of a whisky glass, remember that this here is not a real glass for Single Malt:


It is suitable only for normal, blended household whiskies and that comical brownish liquid the Americans call bourbon

The real Single Malt needs a so called nosing glass like this:


And no ice in the glass! Only fools destroy the divine Single Malt with ice.

That's it. Would it be possible to make something to a really demanding customer?

No worries there....I have no interest in going back to it. I mainly want the wallpapers to drive the family a little nuts if they see it.
I made it a point to keep my Jim Beam coffee mug after I stopped drinking for the same reason....just to prove to them that I was just fine and not going to revert to my evil ways.

At the moment, IMHO, the orbs and whisky (bottle, box and glass) are coming through too much, hard (hope you understand, translated that from Finnish, don't know how to say it better). I would like the images blend smoother to the background, and orb colours not so strong, the difference between pics and background is too strong. Also, orbs could be smaller?

I got big problems noticing bourbon drinkers want to use the same concept, too. Sacrilege. Bourbon = brownish corn schnapps, to be drinked only when there is absolutely nothing else available... Rather with enough Coke or similar to hide the "original" taste. It should not be mentioned when we are talking about whisky (whiskey is word found by distilleries of that mentioned brownish corn schnapps when they realized nobody would believe their product is whisky).

When you sign your name twice at the end of your request either your brain has just come out of the blender or hidden inside one of the Orbs that you want smaller.

For me, having a few drinks of whisky or whiskey I wouldn't be able to tell the difference............You might even start looking good!

I think what Kari is trying to say is that the objects are jumping out of the page to much (a bit to cut out eg. below top image) and they maybe need to blend more subtly in with the background.(eg. below bottom image)
Try and let the background absorb the objects. I could be wrong but these are just my personal thoughts.

Beman, The WMP walls look great but for those of us who don't use WMP, it would be great if you could do a few versions with some other great media players, (just change the letters), for example, a hot player right now is "DAUM POTPLAYER" which is being developed by the guy who developed The KM Player (but that one was sold to Pandora TV and now is not being actively developed by the same talented guy anymore). Anyway, if you could make some walls for "DAUM POTPLAYER" and also "foobar2000" (a great music player) that would be very cool, (even if its the same or similar wall with just changing the name). Thx.

When I joined in April I didn't have a clue about what is a avatar, sig, orbs, or wall paper making.
I met someone, PooManUK (aka Nick) who took me under his wing and helped me along the way. So grab a hold of any of the GFX guys and ask for help. Nick made 2 zip drives with 8 borders to use then add you own colors, text styles, backgrounds and your almost done.
So jump in and have loads of fun like we all do.

So I was playing around with different design ideas in Photoshop for my personal site, and I was still working on the background. Since it was for a website, I was using the resolution of my Chrome browser window (1440/740), I then realised that it would actually make a pretty good desktop wallpaper. But the resolution wouldn't fit any screen, so I opened up a new document (2560/1600) and tried to recreate it. I made something quite similar but not similar enough So here are both of them

I would suggest tow little more things , add two gradient lines on the edges of the white area , and the top and bottom areas should be on top of the white, with a blurry shadow .

Anyway, I always feel that you do wonderful graphics .... sorry that I haven't done it , I was busy with learning some new techniques . I think you should learn those techniques, if those are not already known to you In Custom Made Sig and Avatar [5] (click on it), Nick teach us those things .

Paint.net is good , but not a true alternative of photoshop. Do you have GIMP ? Yes that's a bit complicated, but full of functionality . I also started with GIMP , at at the starting point I was not at par of you . You do have the touch .

I am supplying the psd file . Open it with GIMP, and the layer styles will be clear to you

Beman pal, when trying different font effects in this case a sort of metal chrome look the choice of Font sometimes has a big influence. The font you have used is almost illegible. There are loads of Chrome tutorials out there that might assist you in achieving the results that you are trying to obtain

those look fantastic and that's the exact font and effects I wanna do! but don't forget I'm using paint.net and although its a great program its limited! I don't wanna install PS and learn that alll over again when I am just grasping how to use paint!

Nope pal I used CorelDraw but you could obtain the same results with other graphics programs.
The font I used is Stellar Kombat (free download)

Incidentally - I've been meaning to ask... in the current Windows Seven Forum Logo, I noticed that the color scheme is (in a clockwise manner); yellow, Green, blue, red vs the former green, yellow, etc which more closely follows the the Windows convention. okipoki although there are many ways of creating some cool chrome effects here's a basic one using CorelDraw. The same thing can be done using PS.

There's loads of ways to make a more realistic chrome effect but I'll leave that for another day .... in the mean time enjoy

1. Drop the size of the honeycomb background (make the polygons smaller)
2. The Crysler logo at the top is different to the reflection on the bottom (or is meant to be that way ???)

Give GIMP a go pal, you'll be surprised what you can do, you could compromise and use both packages simultaneously to achieve the desired result

On another note I was messing about with an iPhone wall ... hate the bloody phone but thought it might look cool on a wall ... for all the iPhone lovers ... enjoy

Making wood is not much more difficult in photoshop . First layer is the appropriate color , and the second layer with a random fiber render . Now you are to lighten the render layer at your will , or add some extra effect

I am sure all the needful is in GIMP , too .
