Yesterday, I installed Windows 7 on my computer (I was previously running Vista). Windows Update informed me that I had 39 to load. I said ok and pressed the button. However, when it got to 89% loaded it froze! I've tried installing the updates again but nothing happens. Any help here would be appreciated.
Do not install all updates at once.Try install updates i.e five at time.
Hi! Tried that...no luck. I am at this moment running the MS Update Standalone Package that is supposed to cure this problem. It's been running for 10 minutes now looking for updates !
Reset WU in aggressive mode How do I reset Windows Update components? and try install standalone versions
In aggresive mode, it ran halfway and then the following appeared:
Service 'Windows Update'(WUAUSERV) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services.
Service 'Windows Update'(WUAUSERV) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services.
Uninstall all 3p security software (firewall, antivirus, antispyware) if it don't help import my fix to registry for Windows Update + restart
Still the same, I'm afraid. Deleted 3P products, loaded the Reg fix and tried to download 1 update......nothing. Mind you, I've got the update icon showing saying 89% downloaded, again.
Do you think the information in this Blog would help?

1.Check data & time both in OS and in BIOS.
2.Run cmd.exe with elevated previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin)
and type:
sfc /scannow
if nothing help:
Download & run VistaSysInfoTool http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/...ms-sysinfo.exe (select all in this) and make log
Additonally find in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder CBS.log file -both log from VistaSysInfo and CBS.log attache to post.
EDIT
This solutions is applicable for 2000/XP not for newest systems.Original permissions in Vista/Windows 7 are much more subtle and doing it it will be really permissions violation in the system and it may help only if you have Wu error 8007005.I know for mostly persons with Vista/Win 7 which tried this atom bomb on your system it didn't help.
Why are you asking about this method?Do you have error code 8007005?

No, no error code. I was just "clutching at straws" *s*
So,do it what I asked you in my previous post.
I don't have permission to attach the CBS file
Possibly this file is too big to attache.Pack it and upload it on RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting and past here URL to uploaded file.
I don't have permission to open the file.
To have able to open it right click on file in Windows\logs\CBS folder, choose "copy" and paste in i.e on your desktop, next upload this one from from your desktop
Uploading to Rapidshare
OK,but I need url address to uploaded file.
Just for the sake of it by chance if you minimize the update window is there a command waiting for your attention behind. When my system freezes up during several win 7 updates it was because an action on my part was needed and it was hidden. Just saying?
@Seamus
Do both things at once
1.Disable all shell extensions whom belongs to 3p applications by using this soft http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
2.Disable all 3p aplications processes and services (clean boot procedure) How to Troubleshoot a Problem by Performing a Clean Startup in Windows 7 or Vista, next restart and try again install updates

Good morning ! Well, I did everything you advised but it's still the same. I still get the icon saying downloading 89%. If I could clear that 89% of downloaded files do you think that would cure the problem? I do appreciate all the help and time you are giving me.
Maybe will try this hard method.I have never done this before, but always is the first time:
You have such error:
attache above files to post.
Download & run Process Monitor Process Monitor, when you run PM,try again install only one any update -when WU return error, save log in PM as *.PML format, pack it to *.rar or *.7z format and upload on RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting
You have such error:

Hi, WU doesn't return an error. It just sits there saying it's downloading but doing nothing.
I last successfully updated windows on the 15th. Should I do a System Restore to there and then try to download other updates one at a time?
Yes use system restore if you have good check point
I need also files who I asked you in post 22

C:\Windows\Temp\WERF75A.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
C:\Windows\Temp\WERF77A.tmp.hdmp
C:\Windows\Temp\WERFB52.tmp.mdmp
Those files are not in Temp.
In this cas you have generate new dumpchecks files manually.
run task manager, next Run again Windows Update ,next go to task manager ,right click on Windows Update Application and choose "go to process"
next create *.DMP files for explorer.exe and wuauclt.exe
next click "show prcesses for all users"
,go to services list
choose wuauserv ,right click on it,go to process,it will redirect to one of many svchost processes, right click on highlighted svchost.exe and choose "create dump file",in Processes tab find TrustedInstaller.exe and also create dump file for it.
All dump files pack to *.zip or *rar and attache to post

Hi ! I am uploading the dump files to Rapidshare as they are too large to attach here, but it looks like it is going to take about an hour to do so! I will send the link when done. Witrh regards to TrustedInstaller.exe, it is not showing in the Processes tab. It is showing in Services but not Processes.
Not too much any susspicious in your logs ...
Check below things:
1.Delete folder C:\Users\User\AppData\LocalLow\HPAppData
2.In regedit (Start>>Search>>regedit) delete key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute
+ restart
Check below things:
1.Delete folder C:\Users\User\AppData\LocalLow\HPAppData
2.In regedit (Start>>Search>>regedit) delete key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute
+ restart
Hi ! The HPAppData folder was not on my Hard Drive. I deleted AttachmentExecute. Restarted and tried to download various updates. Each one said it was 99% downloaded but nothing else happens. I was wondering, is there a special file where the downloaded files are stored before being loaded into the Hard Drive?
Are you sure you can see hidden folders too?Folder C:\Users\User\AppData is hidden and of course it's subfolders too.To have it visible you have go to Control Panel>>Folder Options and check "Show hidden files and folders" or use any 3p file manager i.e Total Commander
All files are downloaded to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. You have strange problems with installing updates not with downloading, you said you cannot even install standalone updates from Micrososft Download Center Microsoft Download Center: Download Category Search Results so download location have nothing to that.
Try methods from posts 8-10 of this thread Windows Updates Fail, repeatedly
If it also fail make repair install Repair Install

I'm wondering about one more thing from your post 5
That means "MS Fix it" could not stop this service due to unidentified reasons
Try below also:
1.Turn off and next turn on back system protection - System Protection - Turn On or Off
2.Import this fix to registry wuauservWIn7disable.zip (It disable WU service through registry,to apply changes it require reboot computer) +restart
3.Delete manualy C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder
4.Run again "MS Fix it" from KB971058 in aggressive mode
5.Go to Start>>Search>>services and make sure Windows Update service again is set to AUTO(DelAYED) and started,if not,fix it manually.

Good morning ! When I turn System Protection off, do you want me to also delete All Restore Points?
Yes.You don't need them any longer (you tried already),and they would cuase some issues.
Everything worked perfectly until I tried to download 1 update. It stopped at 45%.
1.What happen if you try install the same update from Microsoft Download Center Microsoft Download Center: Download Category Search Results (not from Windows Update)?
2.In services.msc can you stop and run Windows Updates service without any problem?
1. It downloads ok, but when I open it the WU Standalone Installer appears looking for installed updates. Nothing happens.
2. Yes, it turns On and Off ok.

I second that !!
Good morning Flavius. A miracle has happened! My computer has started to download the updates! I haven't done anything to it since your last instruction but it's just automatically downloading.
I will, and THANK YOU very much for your time and effort *s*
