I have purchased the upgrade designed for Windows Vista to move my daughter's computer to Windows 7.
It has Vista Home Premium SP2 on it now. It has a lot of junk, and all she wants is the pics and videos, which I've backed up. Would it be better to make a clean re-install of Vista with the original Dell disks, and then upgrade to Win 7 (32 bit) followed by Win7 (64bit)? Can it work that way?
Or, should I just clean up the installed Vista as best as possible and then upgrade. I took a 1gb RAM out and installed a 2gb RAM for a total of 4 already, in anticipation of the (64 bit) Win 7 OS.
So basically, I need to know the best way possible to go from 32bit WinVista to 64bit Win7 with a 7 upgrtade from Vista disc.

When upgrading from 32 bit to 64 bit you must do a clean install (with HD format) as the two Operating systems are very different.
That being said, I think your vista is probably 32 bit and therefore you cant do vista32>win32>win64.
Your best bet and most efficient install is the clean 64 bit. There are many tutorials here on SF should you want some reading on the subject.
There is a way to go clean install with upgrade disk, you should google that.

Hello roosterwes JMH is quitre correct in pointing out that you need to perform a clean install with the 64bit 7 dvd since there are no upgrade paths when going from any 32bit version of Windows into the 64bit. The upgrade paths for the 32bit Vista would be to the select 32bit 7 editions of Home Premium and Ultimate there.

As far as the physical memory is concerned and wanting 4gb of ram be sure both 2gb dimms are identical. Mismatched dimms only tend to lead to problems on any system whether 32 or 64bit. The memory should be suitable for the board that comes with Dell you have there.
When starting off with a new version of Windows or even with another OS the best advice given would be starting off fresh with a clean install anyways rather then running into problems due to leftovers and accumilated clutter from the previous installation. Since you already made sure to back all the important things up first the guide will cover the rest there. Enjoy 7 once you have it on!
