Start Menu - Show All Programs automatically part 1

psyalemao

Hi
I would like to know if is possible to show All Programs in the start menu automatically when you click the orb. Because clicking every time to show the list of All Programs is not very nice since I don't use the recently programs open function.

Brink

Hello Psyalmao,

Other than the reply you got at your other post on this, you can use the free program Vista Start Menu to have one that is very customizable. There is no way that I'm aware of with the default Start Menu.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

psyalemao

well I would like to stay with the current start menu, but I will give a try with this Vista Start Menu

Thanks

Brink

The great thing about that program is that you can easily close it at anytime to return to the default Start Menu, then run the program to have the new one again.

Boris

Sorry for posting in this older thread, but having all programs by default would be a neat hack! More so with windows 7, cause all frequent programs are on the task bar. Maybe something for MS to look into?

winsev

If "Number of Programs on Startmenue" = 0 then show "All Programms" when open the startmenue - Windows 7 Taskforce

That describes how to get rid of the white space but it isn't working for me.

no it doesn't - it's just a user saying he wishes things worked like that...

davehc

ugh this is really annoying. I hope MS adds the option or tell me how to do a registry fix. thanks

Boris

I have dragged a shortcut from the "Programdata -Microsoft-Windows-start menu-Programs" folder to the desktop. There were some goodies also in the other start menu which I had to copy over but the result works fine for me.

Guest

That would be cool if ms could do that, or a hack perhaps!

angryelf

Has anyone made any headway in this particular area? I'm trying to just find even information on a registry key for the "all programs" button if possible and then working it from there.

This forum has some info on a few of the keys for the start menu (obviously this is working a diffrent problem...but I think the info may be able to be applied).

If I had to take a guess I would say it would have to be somewhere in one of these folders.
Code:

This should be what you want, right?

angryelf

@winsev, Thanks for the registry key's I'll take a look at those in addition to the ones I already identified, and report back on the function (been digging, and plan on continuing to).

@VirtualPenguin, thanks for responding. Really I do appreciate the assistance both for the little rabbit hole I'm traveling down, and for helping the original poster of the article. But, sadly I myself am not looking for a 3rd party application to solve this issue. Others may be. I've seen and tried CSmenu as well as others menu apps before posting here. I really just want to find a pure reg edit solution that can be scripted (as a third party menu app is not going to be sufficient in a professional office deployment. This is just my opinion). I'm operating under the assumption, or at least the suspicion that one of these situations maybe a hold a possible path to the desired solution;

A: the "recent programs" list is controlled by/contains a registry key that can be redirected to a different location (such as the program shortcut directory). A long shot, and I'm a bit doubtful this is the case but it's the cleanest solution. (requires confirming the recent programs key)

B. There is a way to add an entry (dword) to the key that controls the "all programs" button in start that sets it to active (simulates a mouse click) permanently. This is not as clean in my opinion as option A, but would accomplish

the desired result. (need to identify the key for the all programs button if one even exsists).

My current work around is to send to (create shortcut) the entire program shortcut directory to the desktop, then move each program (one at a time) to the start menu and pin them (after seeting recen items to 0). This works, but is time consuming. The recent list is useless in my opinion, and not very functional to our particular users. I'll admit that I'm coming back to Windows from Ubuntu, and have learned to manipulate GNOME extensively over the last few years since Vista's release (having said that I'm aware I may be expecting too much). But still, I've got a fair bit of experience in the Windows environment, and I'm sure there is a way (via a registry key or otherwise) to accomplish desired result (a .reg file that can be run on a new system and correct/change the start menu function post install).

winsev

There's a registry item called "IStartMenuPinnedList" (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{4CD19ADA-25A5-4A32-B3B7-347BEE5BE36B})

if you find a fix please tell us

themathguy

I'll add my name to the list of folks that would like to see this.

It should be automatic if the recent items are disabled.

arielphf

I'll third this request. I have customized the menu about as much as I can, but I still have no use for the 'recent items' and resent that I can't remove it. If MS won't let us have a Windows Classic menu in 7, can they at least let us customize what they do have so that it meets our needs?

Ariel

Brink

Hello Ariel, and welcome to Seven Forums.

For a classic Start Menu, you might see if CSMenu will give you what you wanted instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

arielphf

Thanks, Brink.

I did try CSMenu and like it very much, but the freeware version was not customizable and I'm always tweaking my menu. Otherwise, it would work brilliantly! Can you customize the Pro version?

Ariel

Brink

Ariel,

I think the pro version only includes Aero in it, but you can try it to see as a trial shareware though.

If you need to bring the Quick Launch bar back it's very easy,. then you create a new shortcut and type this in the Target box"

"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu"

Then drag that to the Quick Launch bar

You now have total access to the Start Menu,. you can move files, create folders.etc

If you want customizable classic start menu (just like in 95, 2000, XP and Vista) try mine: ANN: Classic Shell - start menu and other features
It is still in beta and there are few glitches, but I hope to address them in the next week or 2.

Thanks for the link, Ivo - I'll try it!

Yep, that's how I've been operating with it - that and clearing the 'recent items' (setting => '0') and just clicking the 'All Programs' right away. I actually like the way the new start menu looks when the all programs list fills that empty box and the way I can navigate the menus there so I could really relate to what the threadstarter said. If we could have what that person described, I might even be able to live without a classic menu.

I tried pinning every menu item in the box, but the icons you create that way come out larger than the 'all programs' list and I didn't see any way to scroll pinned items to find those that didn't fit in the little box. It also opens up a new window when select a pinned folder, not just the program you are looking for. And that takes up even more real estate than the old classic menu did.

I guess I am one of the few that just likes to see everything they have when they look through the menus. Maybe most people only use a few of the commands, but not me; I use nearly everything. I always turn off 'Customized Menus' on my programs too - you gotta know what all your options are, ya know?

I just changed nine,. looks much better and easier to navigate.

A pity we have no hack or MS solution for this

If "Number of Programs on Startmenue" = 0 then show "All Programms"

Keep hoping though

I still type with one finger.

I do have a spell checker but forgot to use it

Here ya go:
For the past month I've been working in my spare time on this Classic Shell project. It has:
  • full-featured start menu (keyboard and mouse support, drag and drop, recent documents list, localized in 35 languages)
  • Up button for Explorer
  • and other features
Check out the screenshots.

It is free and open source. I just added it to Source Forge: Welcome to Classic Shell
and Code Project: CodeProject: Classic Shell. Free source code and programming help

The project is still in beta, so glitches and compatibility problems are expected.

Please, give it a try. If you find a problem you can report it here or on the Source Forge help forum.

fantastic program. Thank you.
I posted a couple questions in source forge but just in case you see this one first:

Is it possible to not have My Documents on the start menu? (I notice that right-click delete is not an option), and is it possible to have the "search" on the start menu automatically use a program such as SearchEverything? (I do not like windows search). Thanks again

RIPcord

I've been so busy, I haven;'t even installed it yet.

THANKYOU! THANKYOU! THANKYOU! Ive been waiting for some to make this program since the first hour I installed the win 7 beta. Thank you again.

MrJukes

Way to go davhc

I did that myself, put in on the Quick Launch bar.

spidermagicat

Is there any progress on the original Idea of opening All programs automatically. I'd prefer this to the classic menu, every thread with this subject seems to get hijacked by the classic menu. I admit it is a better solution to our other options but I don't see why we can't try to improve on it :-)

MrJukes

There is no way to make the all programs menu open automatically.

Raargh

Well if that's the case then is there a way of making the entire left panel disappear? I'm currenly experimenting with things like "NoStartMenuLeftPanel" as a reg entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. I've currently got to the stage of a cascaded All Programs in the left panel. If I can somehow remove the right one I will have something similar to the Classic menu but more compact and in the right theme.

And just because no one knows a way to make the all programs menu open automatically doesn't mean there isn't one...

Ivo

Sorry, what I meant was there are no registry settings available to do this. The contents of the all programs menu aren't populated until the user first clicks on the button. This was done for performance reasons since it can sometimes take a few seconds to enumerate the contents for the first time.

Aethera

reghack;

Humblest of thanks from the most low to the most high for the clue re: Classic Shell. I'm slack-jawed with amazed disbelief at it's awesomeness... Mr. Coder - Please keep working on, if you provide a PayPal link I will donate.

Question: I ave enabled the Classic Explorer toolbar, but all the icons are bunched up on the far left. There does not seem to be a slider or other way of getting them over to the right:

Any suggestions most welcome,

Thanks again,

Thanks for the offer, but I do not accept donations for this project. It is done in my spare time and for my own enjoyment.

To move the toolbar you have to right-click on it and uncheck "Lock the Toolbars". Move it where you want it and lock it again (this is to prevent you from accidentally drag the toolbar somewhere). The locking works exactly the same way as for the taskbar.

Thanks so much for this awesome app Ivo! This is *exactly* what I want!

How I organize my custom start menu is to create my own folders under AppData->Roaming->Microsoft->Windows-Start Menu.

I usually create the following folders:
01 Peripherals
--Camcorder
--Camera
--Printer-Scanner
--Webcam
02 Office
03 Web
04 Audio
05 Graphics
06 Viewers
07 Games
09 Utilities
10 System & Security

I then copy in to these folders the shortcuts for all relevant applications that I use. I leave the original Start Menu intact. With Classic Shell this works perfectly and is extremely convenient.

Thank you again Ivo!

Snowdog

Kudos to the Classic Shell Dev.

I originally came here looking how to make "All Programs" my default so I could organize by folders like I used to on XP. But Classic Shell lets me do that.

I only miss ONE feature from the Win7 start bar. The active search/run box at the bottom. Possible to add that to classic shell so I can have the best of both worlds?

Ivo

The latest version of Classic Shell supports many control combinations. For example you can have the Win key open the classic menu, and Shift+Win to open the Windows menu. I assume before you open it you know if you are going to be searching or not

BTW, one of the reasons there is no search in the classic menu is that the search box will be stealing the keyboard input. So you can't just press Win, P, I (for Programs -> Internet Explorer). There are other reasons too, like "it's hard to do"

Not sure what you mean? Shift+win doesn't seem to do anything for me in 1.03 that I DL'd today.

It's no biggie, it was just a would be nice, not worth it if it is a PITA.

Ivo

The latest version is 1.9.0 beta. You have to dig in the files section to find it (because it is an early beta and not 100% stable). A new, more stable version 1.9.1 is coming this weekend.

Snowdog

Tried the Beta.

Awesome!!!

I have only been using Win7 since this weekend so I kind of wanted to keep the Win7 start bar around. This lets me have both. Perfect!

Love the Dir Up level button in Explorer as well. That was the other thing I missed.

Now Win7 feels much more familiar.

Thanks Much.

Several years later.... Same question as above

Is there a way to connect the meaning of clicking on the Orb to clicking on the 'All Programs' button? If there is no easy Regedit solution, are there other possibilities (without installing Classic menu etc.)?

Edit: Sorry, I'm an idiot:
