windows 7 printer prob part 1

ajcoley

Hi
I have installed my hp 4200 series printer to my laptop. Its installed its there it says it working but it wont print! Help pls

richc46

Welcome
Lets start here
Go to search
Type services
Make sure that the printer spooler is set to automatic

If that does not work, from search, go to devices and printers and make sure that the printer is showing.

ajcoley

Yep spooler is on auto and the printer is showing in devices

richc46

Printer attached with cable or wireless?

ajcoley

Attatched

richc46

First lets be sure that the printer works. Attach to another computer, if possible
If that works, go to the website of the printer manufacturer and download the most current driver.

ajcoley

Printer work fine
Downloading now

ajcoley

No still not working

richc46

After the new driver, reboot.

ajcoley

ok do that now

ajcoley

Arrgh! Didnt work!!! I am sure it has to be something really simple!!

richc46

If the reboot does not work
Go back to printers and devices
Is the printer checked?
Is there a yellow triangle, which means a problem?

ajcoley

If there is a print job in the queue that has failed i trouble shoot and it says its failed because the print job has failed (does that make sense?)
So I remove the failed print job and troubleshoot again. Then it says there is no problem!!!!!!

richc46

Did you check printers and devices and look for the check mark by the printer and yellow triangle?

ajcoley

yes when the print job fails there is a yellow triangle

richc46

Sorry go and right click and troublehoot

ajcoley

The answer to the trouble is:

Aprint job in the queue is preventing other print jobs from printing fixed

No its not

richc46

Makes no difference if true or not. The computer thinks that it is true
Make a system restore point first, in case of problems and then try this
Windows 7/Vista: Clear Print Queue

ajcoley

How do you do a system restore

richc46

System restore allows you to go back to good times, in case things go wrong
One is made every week automatically
Before you attempt anything, install etc, you should make a restore point
System Restore Point - Create

ajcoley

Sorry that sounded a bit thick!! lol
Done the restore, now going to do the other thing

ajcoley

ok done all that`
still wont print

richc46

OK, then I just dont know.

ajcoley

ok
thanks for your time anyway

@ajcoley

We need a lot more information:

1) All specs on laptop, especially USB information.
2) All specs on the other machine where the printer works, especially USB information.
3) Screen shots of the errors from laptop, and screen shots of it working from the other machine.

What drivers are you using, Microsoft or HP, on both machines, are they the same??

Have you tried disabling your anti-virus software or firewall and then printing?

Does the HP 4200 have a network card in it?? could we set it up for network printing?

Sorry I know that is a lot but I need it to help.

Note: I will not be back to the forum for about 5 hours.

pebbly

Hi ajcoley, When you installed the driver/software for the printer was the usb cable already attached to the printer and laptop ?

ajcoley

Sorry i am notthat good
USB Spec
Screen shots
I dont really wan to disable firewall ect
There is no network card

normally you have to attach the cable after the installation of the drivers and software , during installation, and by reading the printer manual it should have informed you of this , Uninstall the driver and software, disconnect the USB cable and reinstall driver/software only connect the cable when instructed to do so

Ok I looked in the control panel to uninstall it and i cant find anything to do with hp printer driver, is it poss that it never made it there in the first place?

pebbly

control panel does not always contain the uninstall information , if the software programmer is a bit sloppy writing the programme and forgets or omits this informatiom it will not be registered in control panel, have a look in the HP folder to see if the uninstall information is there

richc46

Go to devices and printers, right click , uninstall device.
Pebbly, I think that you have this solved.

ajcoley

Sorry i am being stupid again
Where would the hp folder be? Cant find it anywhere

richc46

Try going to printers and devices and right click and uninstall device.

ajcoley

Ok done that
Shall i install the driver now without the printer attatched?

Good luck, I have found with printers running on USB you always have to install the drivers etc before connecting the cable, Its also applies if it is a wireless printer it also has to be set up this way first

ajcoley
