7 is not working after dual boot with ubuntu part 1

vikrantsjs

i have dual boot windows 7 with ubuntu, but after that ubuntu run well but it is not displaying any drive. then i restart windows,
it shows 5 boot option 2 of ubuntu, 2 of memtest, and 1 of windows 7 loader(on\devsda2\) something. when i click on it
it shows 2 option:
1. launch startup repair
2. start window normally
when i click on " start window normally" it restart after displaying a blue screen for 1 second.
launch startup repair is also not working.

then i finally decided to start a fresh copy of windows 7, but on partition manager it shows no drive when i boot it from windows 7 DVD.

help me to correct this problem without any data loss.

Hello vikrantsjs.

The first thing to do would be to make backups of the data you need to save to external media using the method out-lined in this tutorial at the link below, it works very well, I've used it myself.

Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

If it still doesnt work then, Boot from the windows DVD and enter the recovery environment.
Open command prompt and type the following commands.

Code:
bootrec /rebuildbcd bootrec /fixboot bootrec /fixmbr

Dinesh

Looks like you'll have to delete all partitions and reinstall windows 7. Of course the windows 7 dvd wont be able to detect the partitions (as you said).

Boot from Linux Live CD, go to System>Administration>Disk Utility.

Now on the left side, select your Hard Disk.

-1.png

Then click on Format Volume. From the dropdown menu, select GUID partition.

-2.png

Once the drive is formatted, boot into the Win7 DVD and see if it lets you format the partition and install windows on it.

Dinesh

If the above method fails, then repeat the same steps but this time from the dropdown menu, select Dont Partition.

vikrantsjs

hi, dinesh , you have tell me 3 commands of which 1st and 3rd run successfully.
now i boot then there is no option of booting ubuntu, but there is option to boot windows which is same as before and is not working.

Dinesh

Hi, you'll need to boot from Linux Live CD.

brianzion

did you install ubuntu with wubi along side windows or straight from a live distro ?

ah that's a shame its simpler to remove that's all. can you not get into windows to boot whatsoever, is it the grub boot menu that controls boot up? and ubuntu is on the same drive as windows?

brianzion

shows 5 boot option 2 of ubuntu, 2 of memtest, and 1 of windows 7 loader(on\devsda2\)

grub 2 i think

No you cant remove ubuntu and install windows 7 without wiping the drive. Hence back up all your data and then follow the instructions I posted earlier. This will wipe out the entire HDD and then you can reinstall Windows 7.

What kind of HD is it? Windows may need to have its driver slipstreamed into the install.

Is it internal., external, etc.

Try partition Wizard free boot disc.

Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to boot computer directly ...

If it can see the drives - shrink one of the partitions a little, then click Apply.

Then try the windows 7 dvd startup repair options.

Super grub is a good utility - Apparently you can boot into windows partitions with it but I am yet to try it.

Another way:

Boot off Ubuntu live cd: Terminal

sudo apt-get install lilo

sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr

Now attempt to boot into your windows partition

sorry , all members i have format all partition using systemrescuecd and then i install windows.
then there becomes 3 partition
1 is same as previous partition i.e. 40 gb
2 is of 150 GB.
and third is unallocated of 102 GB .
help me to recover my data .

SIW2

Did you format the actual partition you want to get the data from ?

Depending exactly what you did, the Partition Wizard boot disc I posted earlier has a partition recovery function.

Click "partition recovery" , do a quick scan of the whole disk.

Tick ALL the partitions you want to keep, then click Apply.

Depending on what you did with the system rescue cd - Partition Wizard might be able to resurrect the entire partition with everything intact.

I showed you an excellent way to recover the data at the very beginning of this thread and you did not take the advice, you just pushed ahead and did the formats; here is the link to the free Partition Wizard bootable disk.

hi have you had any luck yet i have some steps here to help if it is of any help ok

Quick and easy fix to remove the dirty GRUB and get Windows again.

1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and power cycle your PC after setting it to boot from CD Drive in BIOS.

2. Press a any key when you are prompted & select [language, time, currency, keyboard etc.] & click Next . Select Repair Your Computer option in the dialog window.

3. In the System Recovery Options window Click the 1st Option Startup Repair and let it do what it wants to do

IF UNSUCCESSFUL GO TO NEXT STEP

4. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, go to the last option i.e. Command Prompt .

5. Once in the command prompt (X:\Sources> ), type exactly the following commands in the same sequence

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
C:
CD Boot
Attrib bcd s h r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd
