Welcome cat139lyleb to 7forum...
Check this thread:How to install Windows 7 without any external device

Also please attach a screenshot of the error that you are getting while trying to install Windows 7 & also i want to know did you ran Windows7 Upgrade Advisor before trying to install Win7...

Let us know if this work & please revert back so we can check further...

Bill2

Most CD drives are able to READ dvd's, what about yours? If it doesnt, I would suggest buy/borrow an external dvd drive. Since you have windows 98, you must do a clean install of win7 that'll wipe the hard drive before installing.

You may also like to download and run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to check hardware compatibility with the new OS, seeing your machine is really quite old.

Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

Windows 7 won't install on a Windows 98 era PC

cat139lyleb

"Error Starting Program"

"The SETUP.EXE file
expects a newer version of Windows.
Upgrade your Windows version."

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows
Upgrade Advisor does not even work with Win98

So very true.

Quote:
System Requirements
  • Supported Operating Systems:Windows 7;Windows Vista;Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • .NET Framework 2.0 or higher if running Windows XP
Notice no Windows 98

Also if that machine is running 98 and you haven't did an upgrade in a while, I would HIGHLY advise you to research your hardware and software for Windows 7 compatible drivers & software!

My two cents

That can be said with eyes closed.

cat139lyleb

Well, why that Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP and 2008 and able to installing from COMMAND (MS-DOS) by manually without boot up from CD and USB... but not from windows vista and 7???? that's really RIP OFF!!! so there supposed be other way to manually for windows 7 in the COMMAND??? without being in the windows 98se??

youllbelost

This is funny.

sygnus21

To clearify, you can install Windows 7 on that computer IF the hardware supports it!

The problem is that you say the machine is a Windows 98 system. That's a really old system, and if you haven't done any upgrades, than yeah, Windows 7 won't install.

You know the system WAY better than we do. However If I were to bet, I'd say you're not going to get 7 to install on that Windows 98 machine due to hardware issues.

I'm thinking that if you had did any upgrades, you would have at least moved to Windows XP.

My two cents.

Win7 won't probably install on your Win98 PC

Minimum requirements:
  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) processor.
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.

deepakumar

@ cat139lyleb
if your can give more details of your computer that'll help us to know the cause of problem... i agree with what said Yowan if your hardware is more then 5-7 years old (a Windows 98 era PC) then it might be a problem but still give a try to Microsft Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, see if that's work fine or no...

Lets us if this resolve the issue if not we can check into this...

cat139lyleb

yes, very true but this computer from HP was windows XP... so what?
for while but sadly that windows XP been damaged from viruses so i had to re-format to and install windows 98 SE because viruses been kill that restore in HP's Default windows XP... also there no CD with it... only I have Windows 98 SE so I work on it for 5 days so, give me break!

Completely agree on this no deviation from this fact...you may wanna replace the hardware or probably look for a new PC to get Windows7...

stormy13

So what are the full specs of the computer? You have been asked by numerous people and for whatever reason you aren't answering the question.

yowanvista

A new PC would be better, even if Win7 installs you won't probably find compatible drivers and you might run into BSODs

Post your specs here (Start>Run>msinfo32)

cat139lyleb

oh, thank you for remind me!... it's PIII (Intel) 1.2 GHZ, RAM 1GB 133MHZ... HHDs: 8GB, 13GB and 24GB...

cat139lyleb

It might work but it will be extremely slow, its not worth the upgrade

Sir, forget Windows 7 and go back to XP, or... upgrade your system's hardware.

Sorry, but 7 is not going to work or install on that system.

Sorry.

cat139lyleb

so, tell me how to do manually installing in the COMMAND??? thanks!

That's a start. And what does it have for a video card? AGP or PCI? Make and model of motherboard?

If there isn't drivers for any of that then you're wasting your time even trying to get Windows 7 installed.

Even if you install it on that 24GB drive you would soon need additional space for programs and updates

Tews

I highly doubt that you will be able to run Windows Ultimate on that machine...

cat139lyleb

well, give me bypass it please! also I did tested and it's passed test on Windows 7 x32 on very, very older PC with able boot from USB... it's 756MHZ Intel with 133MHZ RAM 1GB, with 40GB

Start here,

Windows Setup Command-Line Options

and if that doesn't have what you're looking for look here,

install windows 7 command prompt - Google Search

and failing that,

Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache EIDE/ATAPI 22X DVD±R DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

cat139lyleb

So can anyone do manually installing from the COMMAND?

cat139lyleb

Wow! that's really sux!, that Microsoft should leave that alone and not to remove it... because of some computer have 1.2 GHZ without boot from USB

DocBrown

Get yourself an inexpensive DVD drive or borrow one from a friend. Where did you get you version of Windows 7 ????

yowanvista

A Linux distro or XP would be better on your hardware

sygnus21

you just beat me to that question as I was wondering the same thing

cat139lyleb

well, sadly there no Windows XP CD, and there serials come with in the HHD but viruses did kill it and no way to get that serials back, I don't know very well with Linux...

Tews

I know I wouldn't buy a 64bit OS for a Windows 98 machine, so it begs the question ... where did you obtain your copies of windows from???

cat139lyleb

I got Windows 7 Ultimate from Stamper Store... need more to tell you?

cat139lyleb

well, that windows 7 Ultimate DVD have 2 versions x32 and x64 in one DVD (it's total 8GB) weird that same as movie we watch it, DVD Movie is 8GB... so... but we knew that each it is 4GB so....

DocBrown

Please, Run CPU-Z so we can see the make & Model of you MB & Memory

cat139lyleb

same it got error like that "The CPU-Z_1.55-SETUP-EN.EXE file

Seems that CPU-Z does not work in win98, stay with XP.
Win 7 will be slow on your machine

cat139lyleb

will work with Mac's DVD Drive from the tower?
