I previously had vista installed an upgraded to windows 7 didn't think twice for some reason to check where it was be downloaded and it went to the d: drive (recovery drive) then had to reload microsoft office and it also want to go to this same drive an ultimately ran out of room and now i'm at a loss as to what to do. Should i wipe out everything and start over and do this in the c drive? any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
Also when i boot up my computer its giving me the option to start up in windows 7 or vista. how do i get rid of vista?
I think i figured out what BFK was asking for in the picture you were asking of. Sorry i'm not as aware of things as i thought i was, lol... thank you for walking me through this. My questions are this.
1) Should i leave Windows 7 in the D: Drive (recovery drive)
2) if i shouldn't then how do i get it off there? and onto the c drive?
3) how do i get vista off there after i get windows 7 on the right drive?
4) if i do leave windows 7 in the D drive i saw through looking through others posting a way to re-route the registry for things to be downloaded into the c drive, is this a good idea? I plan to have an external hard drive back up it all up.
5) if i have an external hard drive someone then said i could remove everything but this doesn't make sense to me because don't use need the programs to make things work... or was this statement meant to say you can remove all your files (i.e. your games, music, documents, etc.... which i had to remove already to back up before i downloaded windows 7 because i was gonna lose them) or am i miss understanding something?
6
is the D: drive being so full gonna slow down the computer any or is really just meant to back up my computer in case it crashes?
7) i will be doing this whole process on my laptop... when i do so which is the appropriate drive i should have windows 7 orginally installed in?
Thanks for any help.

Hello again gigglekisses.
Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.
In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

is that the right screen shot (hiding face) lol
Hello.
Yes that's the correct one, you're doing good.
You say you have made backups to an external Hard Disk Drive (HDD) of the data you want to save, is this correct?
It seems you have installed Windows 7 to the D: partition that was not created for this purpose, its original intent was to contain the files/data to recover the PC back to factory conditions in case of issues, that is no longer possible because you now have a Windows 7 there.
What is it you want to do; you now have a Windows 7 install that is on a partition that is way too small to contain it and you also have an older install of Windows Vista on the C: partition that you say you want to remove, correct.
It is possible and not too complicated to end up with just Windows 7 installed to the HDD and extra free space to store other things to but you will have to completely start over.
Is there still data of any kind you need to move to the external before you start this process?

I have not backed up to an external yet because i don't have it, it's been ordered and will be here on the 9th. There isn't anything that i need to back up because i already did that. i guess i want to fix whatever i did to make things run smoother. i want to get rid of vista ultimately so when i boot up i don't have to keep selecting windows 7. and i don't want to keep having to worry about running out of room when wanting to download programs.... so what would that solution being? if i have to start over, i'm okay with that... i just wanna fix it
OK, this tutorial at the link below is the best way to go forward, take your time and study what you have to do with it to have just Windows 7 installed to the HDD.
SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation
First, do the "clean all" as listed in Step One, it'll take just over an hour, just relax and let it complete.
Then create a single partition to install Windows 7 to using the info out-lined in Step Two #2; then run the installation as usual.
Do you have a full version or an update version of Windows 7 to use for the install?

it says upgrade on the box.
when i download things in the future on this computer will i download things to the d: (recovery drive) or C: drive?
Then this is the tutorial/method to use for the install after the clean all and the creation of the single partition, at this link below.
Do a Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
Do you have another PC to view these tutorials while you do the work?
Just be concerned with one issue at a time ok; get the work done first and we'll discuss that later.
so after step 1 and step 2 as the first link you gave me then i do this... tuterial is that correct?
yes i have my laptop i have next to me...
(would i assume that this tutorial would be the same setup to apply to my laptop upgrade as well)
yes i have my laptop i have next to me...
(would i assume that this tutorial would be the same setup to apply to my laptop upgrade as well)
Yes these tutorials work for desktops and lappys.
i wouldn't need to do the step one and two though for the laptop since i haven't installed windows 7 or anything ont he laptop right? lol... i'm about to start the process on the desktop now. i'll let you know if i run into any speedbumps... thank you so much for your help!
When i download programs in the future should i save them to the c drive or the d drive?
Have you seen this?
lol i just did hahaha sorry i'm anxious lol...
That's understandable; after you have Windows 7 installed and running good we'll cover that.
in step two it's talking about a repair disk is this a disk for vista that it's asking for?
You have a Windows 7 installer so don't be concerned with the repair CD.
oh okay i was starting to get confused... okay i have initiated the clean all - YEAH!!!! happy dance!!! lol i will sit back and wait for this to finish and move on to step 2 #2.
Now when you get to Step Two #2 just create a single partition to install Windows 7 to and later we'll discuss how to create another partition to save downloads to using Windows disk management once you have Windows 7 running good.
YEAH okay it is all done doing the clean! wahoo, now i am a little confused by step two... what exactly am i doing am i skipping the first step since you said step 2 in step 2?
So reading your above post that i didn't see till after i posted my posting i'm still not sure if i start at the beginning of step number 2 or step number 2. Sorry if i'm bothersome i just don't wanna make a mistake. and if i do start at the first step i see that you have to make it a certain size how do i know what size this is. If i don't do the first step then how do what to type, do i type in what i see like the active and exit (individually of course)
and once i am done with this step 2 and it puts me on the language screen do i start the installation from there or do i need to reboot?
From the language screen you can click Next and then Install Now. Select Custom install and then the partition which you just made to install upon. If no partition exists yet, select Drive Options to create New partition, type in 100000 or whatever size you want, Format, Next.

Greg can you tell me from the above directions do i start with step two from the beginning if so how big do i make the partition? ... if i don't start it at the beginning what do i do in step two before i go to the install?
Greg that is really all super confusing i think i will wait until the person who was helping me before replies... he was explaining things very simple for me. sorry i'm not computer literate enough to be able ot understand half of what you just said.
I think BFK may be offline for the night.
What is confusing? Ask questions!
I gave you the full steps to get a perfect install, along with links to the tools needed. Do you not want any of those?
It was clear to me you needed a little extra help which is why I took my time to do that. Instead of complaining that it is too hard, why not ask questions and get the benefit of learning how to make a perfect install?

well i am at step 2... i don't know what i'm doing.. you are suggesting a bunch of other stuff and i wasn't even allowed to ask questions to get ahead of myself lol.. sooooo i'm trying to just figure out what i'm suppose to be doing in step 2... do i type in create partition primary if so.... how do i know how much space to allocate to this... he orginially had type go to step 2 step 2... however... step 2, step 2 doesn't say any procedures that i can tell... other than a screen shot that i see the words "active" and "exit" as commands typed in... so my questions are.. what am i suppose to be doing.
I'm not at the install point see this is why i'm saying its just better to wait till he gets back on... If you looked at the entire conversation you'd see i've been working with someone. I'm not complaining that anything is too difficult in fact i've been working with someone else for a while and told him i have no problem doing everything from scratch. he has been helping me go through everything step by step. I'm sorry i don't understand the way you are explaining but just because i don't doesn't mean you have to be mean to me and tell me those things and act like i'm being lazy or not willing to work something. I just wiped out the install i did do and am trying to do the steps that the previous person who has been working with me is giving me. i'm not going to give them up when i'm literally in the middle of a command screen just because you want me to go to an install screen.
okay that is what i'm asking but he said to go to step 2 of step 2. as in skip step 1 of step 2. see how this could be confusing for someone who doesn't know what they are doing... and if he isn't here to help me and then someone else comes in to take over and doesn't explain this and just assumes i should know what they are talking about. i don't, i'm trying to figure this out.
No i'd like to do it the way he initially set me up with instructions. i do best with instructions if you say do this, do this do this. not a do this, don't do this, yada yada. i get too confused. i created the partition. so now i need to create a size correct?
I understand the tutorial is confusing in that partitioning section.
Type: create partition primary size=102400
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs label="Windows 7"
active
Exit
Close Command Box, click Next on Language screen, Install Now, select partition you created for install, Next to begin install.

IT doesn't matter whether or not you expected me to do them all at once or not. You should probably realize from the conversation prior that i may not be the most knowledgable in computers and that maybe posting that much information would be overwhelming and confusing me in the process. i appreciate your help.. i have a laptop up and i know how to make the screen shot larger so i can see the numbers. I promise i'm not an idiot, computers are just not my day job. i am just simply asking for you to help take me through things step by step. now that you have explain the question i had about step 2. i will work on that part and see how it goes. Thank you.
Computers are not my day job either. Keep in mind that we are volunteers here helping you out of kindness.
Many of us could be making good money doing this same work but have instead helped make SevenForums the leading tech site for Win7 with all volunteers.
Even Microsoft's own Installation forum has only a fraction of the traffic with salaried professionals staffing it.

I get that, i was happy to wait till the person who was helping me before answered me even if meant waiting till tomorrow. you acted as if i wasn't willing to do the work and i was, i have been, it is all i am saying.
Hello again, my apologies for leaving you hanging but it was my beddy-bye time.
Skip #1 in Step Two and at #2 in Step Two enter the commands one at a time and hit <enter> after each command.
That will create a single partition of 100GB to do the installation to, after that enter "exit" 2 times to close the command window and get back to the language screen to start the installation.
Edit: I have now made Step Two #1 less confusing.

so i have completed step 1 and 2 and doing in the install process and clicked custom install. i assume i select the partition 1: windows 7 is that correct?
Hello again, yes do not add a key to this dialog box and remove the check from this box.
BFK it's totally okay that you had to go to bed! LOL i got through the step two last night once i figured out that i needed to skip the first part of step 2 LOL... which was what i was trying to get the other person to answer but he never did... so i ended up having to repeat the process a couple times, talk about frustrating BUT i am back on track
and ready to install windows 7
I'm not at that screen yet, i'm at the where do you want to install windows disk 0 partition 1: windows 7 or disck 0 unallocated space?
partition 1 do not format just click next
So i chose the windows 7 and its installing it there does this automatically put it to the c drive? or did i need to select this manually?
It will be C: by default, then we'll create another partition after the installation is complete.
okay sounds good it is doing the install... i will let you know when it's done installing. i guess all i can do now is wait!
It'll only take about 15 minutes, don't be concerned when it restarts, that's normal.
wait i can't panic... lol come on that's half the fun LOL just kidding it just did the restart haha
Be sure to use a password that you can remember, Windows 7 is not happy when no password is not used at all.
Just so you'll know, I need to leave/sign-off in 1 hour.

oh i always use a password, i am done with this part now. I have unchecked the box and did NOT put the activation code in and hit next.
Should i use the recommended settings?
OK BFK i appreciate you letting me know i appreicate your help! i think we are close to be done right?
Yes, it'll be done in a few minutes, use the recommended settings for now.
Ok it's now brought me to the desktop.
Now post a snip of disk management for me to see.
 Note
In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.
How to Upload and Post a Screenshot and File in Seven Forums
i would first need to install the internet cd and all that first to provide a screen shot right? cause i'm using my laptop to communicate and i'm working on the desktop... can i download the cd from my ISP provider? if so where do i download it to so i can send you the screen shot?
Windows 7 is pretty-much driver complete and you should have internet now, give it a try.
it says i have no internet access when i did this before i had to put my comcast disk in and then internet worked.. i just don't wanna screw anything up. if it asks me to save or download anything i just wanna make sure i save it to the right place. sorry i'm so needy hahaha
Oh wait... i just let it correct itself and it looked like it did! wahoo screen shot on it's way next!
Don't install the CD from your ISP, you don't need it and it's just a way for them to spy on you.
I believe i did it right!
ah HA they are so sneaky! Thank you! you are such a HUGE HUGE HUGE help!! i would and have been pulling my hair out, i have done both an XP and vista upgrade and never had such problems... lol...
Now take the Windows 7 DVD out of the CD-ROM and put it away in a safe place.
Use this tutorial to activate Windows 7 now.
Activate Windows 7 Online
Then use this tutorial to create a new partition to use for whatever you want it for, downloads, data, whatever you like, be sure to give it a "Label" (name) in the appropriate box when prompted.

okay i don't see where to go online to activate it?
Now in the same way you got to disk management post a snip of device manager for us to look at for you to make sure there's no drivers that need added.
See Option Two in the tutorial.
oh okay i was reading that lol and then i saw where it said do it online lol see i get confused easily LOL must be the hair color! hahaha
Blonde or RedHead ?
I've always been partial to red-heads myself!

its giving me an error saying that the key is for upgrading and not clean installations?
hahaha go for the combo and i'm a strawberry blonde! LOL
OK now you have to do one of the workarounds, you are going to have to reinstall Windows 7 again to the same partition you created and this time enter the activation key when you get to that dialog box to let it accept the upgrade.
This time click the "Upgrade" option during the install.
This time click the "Upgrade" option during the install.
So i wanna make sure i understand what you are saying. Put the disc back in. Let it run and install to the same partition as before, enter the activiation code when it prompts and check the box and use the upgrade not the custom option? correct? will you be back on at all today or are you off for the day once you log off?
You are correct in the way to do it and I'll be back in a couple/three hours.
Don't be concerned, we'll get you running.
strawberry blonde eh
Don't be concerned, we'll get you running.
strawberry blonde eh
hahaha okay sounds good LOL... i am not too worried since i have my laptop that i won't be touching till i get the desktop done lol since i'm a fulltime student i need at least one computer to function. yup i'm naturally a strawberry blonde, of course i like to change that! lol I put the disc in and it prompted me to go online to get latest updates or not? it didn't do this before
I just realized i didn't do the other step that you listed before should i have done that before i started this re-install?
i stopped the install and i am looking at the step you wanted me to do just in case because i don't want to screw things up. this looks a little confusing but i'm going to try my best while you are gone.
Hmmmm not sure if i should follow the screen shot and type in 1024 for the size of the new simple volume size? and should this be labeled as drive d: like it was the recovery drive or can i pick any letter? Volume label i could change to any name or should i leave it as volume label is there any suggest names?
No don't give it a size at all just accept all the free space; Did you do the second Windows 7 install yet?
no cause i am working on the partition step i have those questions i posted
i wasn't sure if i was suppose to do the partition first or the install first
Give it the Label "Data Storage" and accept to use all the size, don't enter an amount.
here is the screen shot with the partition. When i do the second install will it prompt me to select a partition? if it does i'm suppose to select the data storage partition correct?
I ask because before i started the partition part, i was going to start the install using the upgrade feature and it didn't ask at the beginning where to install windows, i cancelled the install right away when i realized i didn't do the partition. did it not ask because i didn't create the partition therefore there was no other partition to choose from?
partition is done.
No you are to select the "Upgrade" option and it should auto-select that partition, if it does not select the same "Windows 7" partition you did the first install to; that's how you went bo-bo before, when you were trying to upgrade the Vista you selected to install to the wrong partition.
okay so now i have the partition done i can go ahead and do the install now button and click upgrade and put in the activtation code and go about it as normal correct? when i download programs in the future i should select the data storage location correct?
okay so now i have the partition done i can go ahead and do the install now button and click upgrade and put in the activtation code and go about it as normal correct? when i download programs in the future i should select the data storage location correct?
All of this is correct.
Okay so am i all set for this computer?
One thing at a time, let's make sure it installs and activates ok.
When i do this for my laptop i will follow the link you cave me for the clean install with an upgrade which would include doing a custom ... and selecting the c drive?
hehehehe okay lol grrrrrrrrrrr hahahaha can you tell i'm not patient lol
If you don't/aren't going to have a bunch of stuff you don't want to lose on the lappy, I'd do the same "clean all" to that too to get the best possible space to do the install to and create a second partition to use as storage.
Just remember; doing a "clean all" (secure erase) to a PC Hard Disk Drive (HDD) completely over-writes everything, all data and it will not be recoverable even by the best recovery software.
That's why I was so adamant at the beginning of this thread, I didn't want you losing all your stuff.
i already erased all documents and photos and music on the desktop and laptop and saved to thumbdrives and discs and backed up.
Unless you use a specific software program like a file shredder, 'erasing' (deleting) data does not remove it, data is not removed until it is over-written, it will remain on the HDD forever if it is not over-written.
 Note
Contrary to popular belief, formatting does not remove any data at all, it just checks for sector errors and marks the space to be over-written as needed, all the data is still there including all the code from previous/failed installation attempts.
oh i know what i'm saying is that anything left on the computer i'm okay with erasing permnantly. i've saved everything i need on another device. sorry, lol didn't mean to say that i had thought it was erased for forever already, cause i know that's not the case.
No probs, that's just a pet-peeve of mine, too many people that should know better tell others all the time that a format will remove data from a HDD, sorry if you got in the way of that.
hahaha no worries i can understand that! everyone has pet peeves trust me i am extremely grateful for your help and i am sure that me lack of knowledge can be irritating when you guys deal with us all the time. LOL...
You're not bothering me one little bit.
How's the install coming?
How's the install coming?
its restarting right now
yup
Here is an excellent free anti-virus that a lot of people here are using now.
Microsoft Security Essentials
Microsoft Security Essentials
awesome i will use that one cause otherwise i was gonna use the one that comcast gives us for free, it is going through the last stage of transferring files.
MSE is getting a lot of good reviews from all over and it integrates well with the Windows firewall.
definitely will to give it a try!!
okay it has taking me through to the desktop and accepted the activation key
Did you get a system activated screen like this ?
nope lol.. says 3 days until automatic activation. activate windows now. (i entered the product key earlier)
Well done, now how about that snip of device manager so we can see if there's any drivers that need added though I doubt there will be.
I activated it online and it now says windows is activated. wahoo!!! BFK whenever you see this. i just wanna double check with you if there is anything left on the checklist lol.... and then i'm gonna start adding my microsoft office and other programs and then start on my laptop!
See the post above your last.
okay and i also downloaded that anti virus software too
opps hehehe lol
Do you see those 2 with the
sign? they don't have drivers do you know the details on them so we can see if there are drivers for them somewhere.
one of them is for the wirelss mouse and keyboard (which i'm using right as i'm typing this) and when i clicked on it windows wants me to go to a website to install the driver... should? the other says audio? but when i followed the speakers usb cord unplugged it (as i did to figure out the other was the wireless adapter for the keyboard and mouse) it didn't change the list as it did for the other.
Let Windows install the driver, do you have sound now?
yeah i have sound.
If need be right click them both in turn and see if Windows will install drivers for them.
no it says driver not found... now i'm confused lol
okay i will try that. i have the disk that came witw the usb adapter for the wireless mouse and keyboard, should i put that in?
Yes use the disk.
okay that took away one of the exclamation marks. there is only the audio controller one left.
If it doesn't seem to be causing issues don't be concerned with it.
Congrats, it seems you now have a shiny new Windows 7 to play with.

YEAH okay so i'm gonna go on and add programs before starting this whole process but when i do i'm just gonna start at the beginning of our conversation and just through step by step and do it the exact same way, right?
Are you goung to do the clean all to the lappy?
yup, you suggested that its the best way to get space appropriate for the install.
Just take your time and create a single partition for the install then after you have it activated create the second partition.
